Works under the general supervision of the Chief, Department of Medicine, who discusses policies and objectives. There is no direct supervision, and the individual exercises independent judgment in selection and performance of the full range of diagnostic procedures for patients. Incumbent works independently in accordance with methods and practices of the medical profession and established administrative policies as an expert in the field of Internal Medicine (Cardiovascular Disease). Medical diagnoses are not reviewed and the individual has considerable latitude for professional technical decisions, overall effectiveness, and accomplishment of objectives. The quality of professional and administrative work is evaluated using the quality assurance principles, policies and regulations as mandated by the Joint Commission, and as structured by appropriate Army and local regulations and policies.

Performs duties as a practitioner and as a consultant in Cardiovascular Medicine with emphasis on problems of marked complexity. 

1. Serves as attending physician on the cardiology inpatient consult service. Attends inpatient multi-disciplinary rounds Monday-Friday of each work week. Must be available on-call from home up to 14 days per month. Must be available for telephonic or personal consultation for inpatient care when on call. 

2. Examines, diagnoses, treats, and follows out-patients with cardiology problems of all complexities. Patients arrive at the Cardiology Medical Clinic referred from other clinics or physicians. Physician is able to competently manage cardiac problems in an outpatient clinic setting.

a. Interprets echocardiogram and performs abbreviated point of care examination as emergently required. Aids in the performance of Transthoracic echocardiogram at level of competence.

b. Provides continuing follow-up care for chronic diseases and complications of these diseases such as, valvular heart disease, ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and hyperlipoproteinemia. Provides comprehensive physical evaluations. 

c. Examines and conducts thorough evaluation of patients utilizing laboratory and clinical findings to appropriately treat or refer patients to the appropriate specialty clinic.

d. Collaborates with specialists in other subspecialties or cases with complex and multifaceted problems. Follows through on all patients to ensure effective comprehensive medical service.

4. Conducts clinic orientation for new medical residents, teaches in formal lecture settings, mentors and conducts final evaluation feedback. Participates in the Carl R Darnall Army Medical Center Continuing Medical Education programs. Qualifies annually in the Basic Support Healthcare Provider Course.

5. Supervises medical students, interns, and residents as they provide medical care (diagnosis) and treatment) to patients in the Cardiology Clinic.

Be a US Citizen

Must be Board Certifed - this position requires continuous board certification in Internal Medicine and Cardiology equivalent to Level 4d 

Unrestricted, unemcumbered license

Must possess a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation or a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States that is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training. Graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Listings of accredited programs are published yearly in the Directory of Residency Training Programs and the Yearbook and Directory of Osteopathic Physicians. The internship program must have involved broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Licensure: Must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
