The inaugural Division Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Division. The Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of academic, research, and clinical programs of the Division. The Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care will have financial authority over the state ­appropriated budget assigned to the division, extramural research funding received, philanthropic funding, and other financial matters for the division in accordance with applicable University policies and practices. The Division Chief will have discretion in the recruitment and retention of division faculty who will have a direct reporting line to the Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care.

This position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine within the College of Medicine – Phoenix for all academic activities. Consistent with the Academic Affiliation Agreement (AAA) between the University of Arizona and Banner Health, the Division Chief will have a matrix reporting relationship to the Chief Executive Officer of the Banner-University Medical Group (B-UMG) and CEO of B-UMC (Phoenix) for all clinical activities conducted at Banner-University Medical Center (Phoenix).

Consistent with the College’s foundational principle of collaboration, the Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care will work in close collaboration and partnership with others across the College of Medicine – Phoenix, University of Arizona Health Sciences (UAHS) Deans, Department Heads, Institute and Center Directors, and with the College’s clinical partners. The Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care engages and interacts frequently with University of Arizona academic leadership and support units, University of Arizona Foundation, Banner-University Medicine leadership, key external stakeholders and community officials.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Faculty Affairs:

  • The Division Chief, Pulmonary-Critical Care is responsible for recruitment, supervising, compensation, and retention of faculty in consideration of UA (“Never Settle”), UAHS, College, and B-UMG strategic plans and initiatives to accomplish the tripartite mission of the University.
  • Mentor junior faculty in the Division to help fulfill their career aspirations and succeed as future academic leaders

Educational and training programs:

  • The Division Chief, Pulmonary-Critical Care will collaborate with Academic Affairs and other educational offices at the College to ensure the department and his/her faculty are advancing the mission of the medical student, graduate student, and graduate medical education teaching programs. The Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care is responsible for maintaining liaison with other clinical and/or basic science departments to foster an integrated teaching environment for the College.
  • The Division Chief will be responsible for ensuring outstanding educational experiences are available to the pulmonary/critical care fellows in order to maintain

Research programs:

  • The Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care has the responsibility to encourage and support research creativity and productivity within the department, across the College and UAHS and with the College’s key partners.
  • Provide leadership oversight and effective management of an active program of independent, extramurally funded basic, translational, or clinical research in area of research expertise/specialization.

Patient care programs:

  • The Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care is the clinical role model and leader of the department’s clinical activities. The Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care works with the Dean, Department Head and the B-UMG CEO to coordinate the clinical activities of the Division. The Division Chief is responsible for ensuring clinical excellence and achieving quality metrics.
  • Engage community physicians in collaborative programs.
  • Provide direct patient care in the inpatient and/or ambulatory setting as a licensed and fully credentialed provider as a member of Banner-University Medical Group.
  • Collaborate with leadership to define signature programs unique to B-UMG and CoM-P

Finances and budget:

  • The Chief of Pulmonary-Critical Care is responsible for ensuring the fiscal accountability and sustainability of the department working with the College’s Business Affairs Office.
