Become a part of an innovative, dynamic, nationwide organization of dedicated health care providers working to meet the individual health care needs of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Indian Health Service (IHS) employees are considerate in our care, creative in our approach, enthusiastic about our work and compassionate with our patients.

About this position. We are recruiting board certified Physician (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Pediatric Medicine) positions to serve as Locum (PRN) Medical Officers who work in the place of the regular Physicians who are absent, or when a clinic is short-staffed. No regular work schedule or work guaranteed. These positions report to the Chief Medical Officer in the Portland Area Office located in Portland, Oregon. The duty station is Portland, Oregon; however, based on the need of the health centers, incumbent(s) will be assigned to any of the Federal Indian Health Service Units in Idaho, Washington or Oregon.

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. The IHS is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

These positions are also being announced as an open continuous announcement that allows acceptance of applications throughout the open period with eligible applicants being placed on a standing register and referred for consideration as vacancies occur. A submitted and completed application package will expire three (3) months after submission and you will need to reapply to keep your application active. This announcement is intended as a mechanism of providing consideration for the greatest number of potential candidates. The first cut-off date for referral of qualified candidate(s) to be considered for available vacant positions will be March 1, 2018. Thereafter, cut-off dates will be established based on the date a request is received from management to fill a position.

These positions are also being announced concurrently under alternate hiring procedures for the agency's merit promotion plan (MP) and agency's excepted service examining plan (ESEP). For eligibility requirements of both ESEP and MP, review vacancy announcement number IHS-18-WR-101411486-ESEP/MP. Applicants must apply separately for each announcement in order to be considered.

Company

The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), works to ensure that all American Indians and Alaska Natives receive comprehensive, patient-centered health care services and all Indian health facilities are staffed with well-trained, compassionate, committed health professionals.

IHS offers physicians an extraordinary career opportunity to provide community-based care within a variety of health care settings. A wide range of medical specialties are in demand, including anesthesiology, emergency medicine, epidemiology, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, radiology and surgery. Many of our physicians serve the Indian health community as clinical consultants and advocates for system-wide improvements and innovations.

Indian health careers offer dedicated practitioners a chance to live and work within Native communities, providing a unique opportunity to learn about Tribal culture and experience traditions that have been handed down for generations.

An Indian health career offers physicians a choice of three practice options: working as a federal civil service employee, as an Officer in the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service (USPHS) or directly for a Tribal or Urban Indian program. Each option offers career flexibility, competitive salaries and benefits and ample opportunity for advancement. Applicants must be US citizens.

Another key benefit is the IHS Loan Repayment Program (LRP), which offers health professionals practicing at Indian health facilities an opportunity to pay off all of their health education student loans in addition to receiving competitive salaries and benefits. Participants are eligible to receive up to $20,000 per year and can extend their contract annually until all of their loans are paid off.

The policy of the IHS is to provide absolute preference to qualified Indian applicants and employees who are suitable for federal employment in filling vacancies within the IHS. IHS is an equal opportunity employer.
