POSITION PURPOSE:

 

Responsible for overseeing the operations of a hospital or non-hospital subsidiary within Geisinger Health.   Ensures the business unit's goals and objectives are aligned with the organization's broader mission, vision and driving strategies.  Collaborates with the GH Chief Quality Officer, Chief of Quality and Safety, and Associate Chief Quality Officers in strategic planning to improve quality and safety and implement that plan via division resource allocation, system resource utilization and external partnerships.  Provides oversight for Quality, Patient Safety, Regulatory Accreditations, Risk Management, and Infection Prevention/Control including daily operations, strategic planning support of system and service line operations and goals, regulatory compliance, etc.  Responsible for the continuing development and effectiveness of key areas of responsibility.  Integrates concepts and functions of Quality and Safety with clinical operations to foster improvement, harm reduction, etc.  Perform under the general direction of the Chief Quality Officer and the Chief of Quality and Safety.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·         Responsible for operational activities and functions within the assigned business units.

Responsible for the overall operation and growth of the business units, in conjunction with the applicable Medical Directors.

·         Develop functional and strategic objectives based upon data, evidence-based best practices, business drivers and regulatory requirements.  Administer implementation plans and monitor progress, and revise plans as necessary relative to areas of responsibility.

·         Collaborate with clinical and operational resources in prevention of avoidable patient harm and enhancement of quality in all spheres of clinical care.

·         Develop and implement business unit policies and procedures in conjunction with the Medical Directors.

·         Responsible for the dissemination of meaningful, actionable data aimed at improvement and organizational success.

·         Develop and promote the Geisinger culture; ensure environmental issues support the culture including integration with driving strategies, improvement, patient centeredness, regulatory compliance, etc.

·         Foster culture of service throughout the health system with improvement based upon data.

·         Support the development and continued enhancement of a culture of safety throughout Geisinger.

·         Direct and/or support selection of personnel in assigned areas; assume direct responsibility of professional growth and development of such staff to include plans for organizational development.

·         Ensure management of human resources; ensure appropriate quantity and type of staff are available to support programs, markets and customer needs; monitor trends to plan people needs.

·         Provide direction to, hold accountable, develop and evaluate staff in their performance of all goals and objectives of the business units, region and the organization.

·         Provide regular meetings and other forms of communication with reporting personnel, physician staff and other liaison areas to assure awareness of routine operational and organization-wide issues of significance.

·         Administer the performance improvement plans for assigned areas through management staff and other available resources; provide for the identification of responsibility for quality of services rendered by assigned departments.

·         Collaborate in leadership to identify and define organizational priorities, directions, etc.

·         Seek to enhance quality of service through process improvement, team building and cultivation of shared values and commitment. Foster and plan a positive work environment with teaming, respect and communication; support personal growth and development of people.

·         Ensure strategies and procedures exist to maximize financial resource management including development and achievement of financial performance objectives.  Prepare an annual budget and regularly monitor for performance against the approved budget.

·         Ensure effective, efficient and cost-effective use of non-clinical resources in order to maintain a productive environment.

·         Establish long-range objectives and monitor financial performance of assigned business units. 

·         Administer all division activities in accordance with health system policy and federal, state, local and industry regulatory agencies.

·         Participate in continuing education programs to expand knowledge of professional discipline; participate in health-related associations to maintain expertise and promote interests of the health system.

·         Develop and maintain effective liaison with management, physicians, patients and employees.

·         Understand, support and participate in information technology, development, marketing and public relations initiatives on the business unit and system level.

·         Provide administrative support to achieve the objectives of medical education and clinical research (i.e., contracting, funding).

·         Serve as a liaison with community and governing authorities.

·         Perform duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

·         Demonstrated leadership, facilitation, and networking skills (ability to think strategically) (leadership effectiveness competencies).

·         Demonstrated analytical and financial   management skills (operating and capital budgets) (organizational effectiveness competencies).

·         Demonstrated change management skills (organizational effectiveness competencies).

EDUCATION &/OR EXPERIENCE:

 

·         Masters degree in Clinical Specialty, Hospital Administration or equivalent related discipline required.

·         Advanced degree preferred

·         Minimum 8 years experience leading a department of a health care organization required, preferably in a comprehensive medical center or integrated health system.   Minimum of 10 years prior management experience required.

·         Requires demonstrated knowledge of principles of management and leadership.

·         Requires demonstrated competence in written, oral and electronic communication skills.

·         Requires prior experience in a multi facility organization.

WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

Work is typically performed in an office environment, as well as settings throughout the system and surrounding communities.  Independent travel to the sites is required.
