The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah is seeking applications for the position of Chief, Division of Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Utah.

The Division of Oncology is one of 12 divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine. The 21 faculty, 11 adjunct faculty, and 29 advanced practice clinicians cover the entire spectrum of medical oncology and are dedicated to high quality, value-driven patient care, education, and innovation & discovery through basic, clinical, population, and health services research. The Division of Oncology is the only academic medical oncology program in the Intermountain West and aligned with the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI), an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center serving a large geographic area. HCI has recently undergone a major expansion of its research space, an architectural transformation of the School of Medicine campus is underway and new clinical facilities are under construction. The Department of Internal Medicine and HCI are undergoing major expansions of their clinical and research operations and are committed to supporting the growth of the Oncology Division through recruitment of new clinical, translational, and laboratory-based faculty. The Division is highly committed to educating the next generation of medical oncologists as expert clinicians and outstanding academicians. A combined hematology/oncology fellowship program accepts four incoming fellows per annum who undergo rigorous clinical and research training.

The Chief will be accountable to fulfill the education, research, clinical, and administrative service missions and values of the Department of Internal Medicine. She/he will develop the strategic vision for the Division that is aligned with the Department and HCI. Competitive candidates will have a track record of accomplishment as an academic medical oncologist, as evidenced by original contributions to the field, national or international visibility, and a history of peer-reviewed funding. Strong leadership abilities are required, including the following:

  • Ability to recruit excellent clinical and research faculty.

The Chief will work closely with the Chair of Internal Medicine to promote a collaborative environment that enhances clinical growth and academic development, and advances research consistent with Department and Institutional missions. The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader who promotes institutional stewardship throughout the University of Utah Health Care system.

HCI and the University Health Sciences Center provide access to state-of-the-art equipment and services through exceptional Core Facilities (see: www.cores.utah.edu) that enhance both discovery and translational science. HCI offers state-of-the-art laboratories, including a new 225,000 sq. ft. research building that doubles the Institute’s research space, which opened summer 2017. The Department of Internal Medicine has seen double-digit clinical growth for several years and was ranked 31 in NIH funding in 2016. The University of Utah offers excellent graduate programs for training PhD and MD/PhD students. Candidates must qualify for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level on the Tenure Track at the University of Utah, must be board certified in Medical Oncology, and must be eligible for a renewable medical license in the State of Utah.  Please submit a curriculum vitae, cover letter containing a description of professional experience (including scientific accomplishments, leadership responsibilities, mentoring experience), three references, and a 2-3 page research plan.
