This highly-regarded academic medical center program in northern California consists of a one-year, ACGME-accredited training year focused on the core competencies of interventional cardiology including stent placement, STEMI intervention, complex PCI, chronic total occlusion treatment, and adjunctive therapies such as rotational atherectomy, embolic protection devices, laser atherectomy, hemodynamic support, and intravascular imaging. The cardiac catheterization lab consists of four state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories, as well as a hybrid operating room with full cardiac cath lab capabilities. The volume of procedures at our center is high with > 2500 diagnostic catheterizations, > 600 percutaneous coronary interventions, > 300 transcatheter aortic valve replacements, and > 100 transcatheter mitral valve repair and left atrial appendage occlusion procedures per year.

Our interventional cardiology program accepts one new fellow each year out of a highly competitive group of applicants. The second year of the fellowship is an optional non-ACGME year which allows further specialized training in structural heart interventions, as well as serving in a “junior attending” role to allow polishing of skills within a framework of supervision and backup before entering the challenges of clinical practice. Fellows work alongside attendings, housestaff, nurse practitioners, and additional allied caregivers to guide patient care in the Cardiac Care Unit and Cardiac Catheterization labs, and outpatient interventional clinics.
