Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer) Opportunities at NIMH

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders. NIMH is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest biomedical research agency in the world. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIMH is seeking motivated individuals to serve as Program Officers to administer and manage extramural portfolio of research grants and develop new research initiatives. There are multiple opportunities in the following areas within NIMH:

Translational Science: The Division of Translational Research seeks applicants with expertise in clinical research on adult anxiety, depression, and/or the development and testing of novel psychosocial interventions for mental disorders. Candidates with expertise in related fields that emphasize multidisciplinary approaches to understanding the underlying causes of and developing effective treatment for mental disorders will also be considered.

Interventions and Services Research: The Division of Services and Intervention Research seeks applicants with expertise in intervention and services research focused on adults with Serious Mental Illness and/or youth with Serious Emotional Disturbance; expertise in pharmacological interventions is highly desirable. Candidates must have expertise in approaches to practice-based research, including rigorous quality-assessment/quality-improvement methodology.

Basic Neuroscience and Behavioral Science: The Division of Neuroscience and Basic Behavioral Science seeks applicants with expertise in fundamental neuroscience research to define genetic, molecular, and cellular processes determining function and plasticity within brain circuits relevant to emotional regulation, cognition, and mental disorders. Areas of specific interest include neuronal signaling, synaptic plasticity, neuroendocrinology, and neuroimmunology.  

Behavioral and Neuroscience: The Division of AIDS Research seeks applicants with expertise in behavioral and neuroscience research in the prevention and treatment of HIV as well as HIV-associated mental health comorbidities and implementation of evidenced-based interventions. Candidates with expertise in related fields that emphasize multidisciplinary approaches to addressing HIV-related neuroscience, behavioral, and social science priorities will also be considered.

BRAIN Initiative: The Office of Technology Development and Coordination seeks applicants to manage technology development applications that are part of the BRAIN Initiative (www.braininitiative.nih.gov). Areas of expertise that are relevant include cell and circuit based tools including new optogenetic probes and magnetic resonance imaging.

Qualifications

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have successfully completed all the degree requirements for a MD, PhD, or equivalent experience. Relevant research experience and experience with the grants process is preferable.
