Duke Neurosurgery is seeking a General/Spine Neurosurgeon to be based at the Durham VA Medical Center.  The Durham VA Medical Center is a 271-bed tertiary care referral, teaching and research facility affiliated with Duke University School of Medicine and conveniently located directly across the street from Duke University Hospital. 

The successful candidate for this position will be BC/BE by the ABNS, well-trained, have 3-5 years' experience and a passion for caring for the veteran population.  Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) techniques are preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with broad-based clinical experience and with demonstrated excellence in the academic environment and a commitment to mentoring Duke's neurosurgical residents.  Faculty rank and nationally-benchmarked salary will be commensurate with training and experience. 

The majority of the cases are spine (Lumbar Discectomies and Fusions, ACDF, Posterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion).  The breakdown would be 60% spine cases, 15% functional (SCS, DBS), 15% cranial (tumors, shunts), 10% peripheral nerve.  Residents assist in all OR cases and help in clinic.

Duke Neurosurgery has OR time 4 days/week at the VA.  Call is currently handled by Duke's Trauma service, but hired physician will be required to participate as needed.  On average, there are 1-2 non-urgent consults per night with first response by handled by the first-call residents. Urgent operative cases occur about once every 3-6 months.
