Job Details

The Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC), the oldest (1912) Harvard affiliated public psychiatry program, seeks a board certified/eligible Psychiatrist to provide consultation, risk reviews, and assessments to DMH clients in community based outpatient settings. The Attending Psychiatrist will work alongside industry leaders in mental health services including the historic mental health clinics, the Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Center and Lindemann Mental Health Centers, as well as community based agencies, Vinfen and BayCove Human Services. The clients are adults cared for by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) with major mental illness, disruptions in attachments, trauma, poverty, substance abuse, and homelessness.

Areas of responsibility can be tailored to the particular interests and expertise of the individual selected, but will include the following:

  • Consultation with Metro-Boston Site Directors and site staff regarding the assessment and treatment planning of DMH clients
  • Participation in Site Risk Management meetings and Site Treatment planning meetings with CBFS providers
  • Consultation with Lindemann Inn and Bay View Inn shelter staff regarding the treatment of clients in residence.
  • Assessing and preparing documentation for Rep Payeeship for applicable clients and affidavits for Probate Guardianship/Rogers proceedings when appropriate.
  • Providing assessment of prospective clients referred for DMH services as well as clients referred from acute psychiatric units for Sec. 3 transfer to a state hospital.
  • Testifying in Sec. 35 court proceedings when necessary.
  • Teaching and supervising psychiatric residents on rotations involving site-based services.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Center Director, Facility Medical Director, and/or Area Medical Director.

Location and schedule: The Attending Psychiatrist will work 20 hours per week split evenly between Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center and the Lindemann Mental Health Center sites in Downtown Boston. Designated parking will be made available at each site. A subset of scheduled hours are open to being negotiated during interview.  

Requirements: Board certification or eligibility in adult psychiatry required. Previously experience with the pharmacology of complex illness and psychiatric rehabilitation of adults with persistent mental illness required. Familiarity with forensic consultation and court system is preferred but not required.

MMHC is affiliated with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS). This position may provide opportunities for HMS faculty appointment as Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor through an academic appointment.
