The Allegheny Health Network Department of Medicine seeks a board-certified hospital internal medicine specialist to join our thriving residency faculty and assume a role as the program’s Educational Officer for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.

The ideal candidate will gain opportunities for achievement and recognition as an outstanding clinical educator and a leader in promoting the quality/safety training mission within our residency program and Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), our 530-bed quaternary referral center.  We are a large internal medicine residency training program with 105 residents, seated in the fully integrated health care delivery system that is Allegheny Health Network (AHN), alongside ten ACGME-accredited specialty fellowships within the Department.  We prepare our residents for their careers with a broad range of core rotations and the opportunity to tailor elective experiences to their interests. Our strengths include: broad clinical experience across all the specialties of internal medicine; a talented, dedicated clinical teaching faculty, a robust didactic curriculum and research program, and a highly supportive environment.  Quality improvement is a key priority for the program, the Department and our Network.  We have a robust culture of patient safety among the residents, an already highly developed curriculum in QIPS, and a strong track record of residents participating in, and often leading, initiatives within the Department.

Primary responsibilities of the position will include clinical supervision of residents on our inpatient teaching services at Allegheny General Hospital, and oversight of the program’s robust quality and safety curriculum, which includes serving as medical director for the AGH Complex Medical Care Unit, a 60-bed unit staffed by our four inpatient teaching service teams.  25% protected effort is offered for this vital core faculty role, with the opportunity to apply for an associate program director position granting additional support to perform duties for the program beyond QIPS, if desired.  There will be opportunities to mentor motivated residents in performing scholarly QI projects appropriate for presentation at national meetings and submission to peer-reviewed journals.  Mentorship and support will be provided by the program director and Vice Chair of Education, who has formal training as a quality/safety educator; opportunities for additional skill/career development can be negotiated.  Faculty appointments are available through Temple University, Drexel University, and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The qualified candidate will be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency program who is eligible for a medical license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Residents who anticipate graduating in June 2018 may apply for this position, with core faculty or associate program director designation contingent upon passing the ABIM certification exam, in accordance with ACGME regulations.

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) – a subsidiary of Highmark Health, the third largest integrated health care delivery and financing system in the nation, –  is an integrated delivery network focused on preserving health care choice and providing affordable, high-quality care to the people in our communities.  With more than 14,000 employees including 7,400 health care professionals, and nearly 200 primary care and specialty care practices, Allegheny Health Network includes 7 hospitals in Pennsylvania with nearly 2,400 licensed beds, and a large academic training program.
