The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS), the second largest municipal safety net system in the United States, is pleased to announce a unique HIV fellowship training program for physicians committed to improving primary care for people living with HIV in underserved communities. This program brings together the unique strengths of DHS, USC Keck School of Medicine’s AIDS Education Training Center, UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine’s Southern California Clinical Leaders Program, and ViiV Healthcare.

The purpose of this fellowship is to train physicians in the knowledge and skills necessary to provide expert HIV care, to be health systems leaders, and to be successful community partners in patient-centered and community-specific HIV interventions.

Overview of the HIV Fellowship

Year 1 of the fellowship primarily provides in-depth clinical training in the medical management of persons living with HIV/AIDS at all stages of their disease, from initial diagnosis to advanced treatment of multidrug resistant viruses and opportunistic infections.  Besides solidifying skills in the management of common co-morbidities in the setting of immune suppression in community and academic settings, fellows will also work with mentors to design and implement research projects that will seek to improve care on a community or system-wide level.

Year 2 of the fellowship enables fellows to spend approximately half of their time providing HIV and primary care within DHS’s primary care settings and the other half participating in scholarly work through graduate coursework at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and through completion of a research project that focuses on improving access to or quality of HIV care - especially for underserved communities - in a meaningful and sustainable way.

Certification and loan repayment. At completion of the first year, fellows will be eligible for specialist certification through the American Academy of HIV Medicine. At the completion of the program, fellows will be eligible for an academic loan repayment of up to $50,000 per year for three years if they continue to provide HIV-related care or service for underserved communities after the fellowship.

Applications are currently being accepted through November 15th, 2017. The fellowship program may accept up to four qualified candidates and begins on August 1, 2018. Ideal candidates are board-certified or board-eligible graduates of a residency program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Medicine-Pediatrics with a strong interest in HIV medicine and an interest in building community programs to improve access to quality HIV care. An active California MD or DO license is required before beginning the program.
