The Duke Department of Surgery-Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Duke University Medical Center has an immediate need for a full time, Board-Certified/Board Eligible general or cardiac surgeon with organ harvesting/transplant experience to fill a position as a heart procurement specialist. Opportunity exists to be involved with ECMO care.
The Heart Procurement Surgeon will be an integral member of the heart transplant surgical team and will provide collaborative patient care. He/she will actively participate in heart procurement procedures and has the responsibility to ensure smooth team work through effective communication with donor coordinators, operating room staff, other members of the procurement team, and recipient surgeons. The Duke program is also heavily involved in artificial donor organ support, which requires a high level of technical skill and understanding of cardiac physiology. He/she will be responsible and accountable for reviewing donor documentations, ensuring safe organ transport according to guidelines, assessing and discussing organ compatibility with recipient surgeons, and delivery excellent patient care.
Assumes on-call responsibilities as the leader of a team of transplant fellows to assure adequate coverage for donor activity and will participate as requested to assist in the recovery of organs for transplant within the region or nationally. He/she will be expected to have thorough knowledge of clinical, laboratory, and regulatory standards and procedures and have the ability to work effectively with a broad range of medical professionals.
