Job Details

Alosa Health is a 12-year-old non-profit organization based in Boston that is the nation’s largest independent provider of non-commercial, evidence-based educational outreach programs and training (“academic detailing”) to improve physicians’ prescription drug choices and other clinical decision-making. Alosa staff work with a team of physician consultants drawn primarily from Harvard Medical School faculty, to synthesize and disseminate impartial evidence about medication benefits, risks, and cost-effectiveness to prescribers in their own offices. (see www.AlosaHealth.org) We are seeking a colleague to help us initiate new educational outreach programs with health care systems throughout the country that seek to rationalize their medication use, improve clinical outcomes, and contain unnecessary drug spending.

The successful candidate will be a physician or other health care professional with a passion for improving decision-making in medicine. Relevant skills will include an understanding of health care system change, evidence review, and clinical education. S/he will:

  • Help create new partnerships and innovative approaches to disseminate non-commercial, evidence-based information to prescribers.
  • Reach out to potential sponsors, partners, grant makers, and clients on the merits and implementation of educational programs, including academic detailing, to improve clinicians’ drug decisions.
  • Work closely with other members of the Alosa team to further develop the evidence-based clinical content of Alosa programs and materials.
  • Engage with policymakers and thought leaders at the state, local, and federal levels, as well as senior executives of health care systems and payors, to familiarize them with options for achieving more effective prescribing and outcomes, and approaches to improve outcomes and contain drug costs through educational outreach and related modalities.
  • Help to identify new areas of chronic disease management that can be improved through the development of new clinical education materials (e.g., biologics, biosimilars, and other specialty drugs) and the deployment of academic detailing or other novel educational outreach programs.
  • Participate in medical conferences as a thought leader on innovative approaches to improve clinical decision-making through educational outreach.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Clinical Materials Development, Alosa’s team of physician consultants under the direction of Jerry Avorn, MD, of Harvard Medical School, and the Alosa Board.

Neither Alosa nor its staff or clinical consultants accept any payments from any pharmaceutical companies. The position can be combined with other complementary part-time clinical or research activities if desired.

Interested candidates should send a CV and cover letter explaining their background and interest in the position to Paul Fanikos, Executive Director, at: pfanikos@AlosaHealth.org

Company

Alosa Health is a national leader in developing and implementing academic detailing programs to improve prescribing. At our core, we believe that medical decisions should be based on unbiased, evidence-based information. Our mission is to improve patient outcomes by identifying and disseminating the best evidence available, to support health care professionals in providing optimal care to their patients.

Alosa Health’s founder and chief clinical consultant, Dr. Jerry Avorn, pioneered the concept of academic detailing as a way to optimize the prescribing practices of primary care physicians. Over the past decade, we have refined this innovative information delivery method and partnered with state governments, federal agencies, and private organizations to create academic detailing programs and training events. Our programs have expanded beyond prescription drugs to include non-drug therapies and diagnostics as well.

The largest program of Alosa Health is the Independent Drug Information Service (IDIS), the leading state-supported academic detailing program in the country. Our team of medical school physicians has developed a comprehensive portfolio of clinical education materials that provide unbiased information and expert guidance on managing common health problems. The educational module topics are all relevant to primary care, such as type 2 diabetes, chronic pain, and congestive heart failure. Each educational module is written for healthcare professionals and includes a comprehensive literature review, prescriber educational materials, and patient education aids, which are updated regularly. This program is supported by the Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly (PACE) program of the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, the Vermont Health Care Association, and the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living.
