Baystate Health, a Truven® Award–winning healthcare system and home of the University of Massachusetts Medical School-Baystate, is searching for an experienced physician to join Baystate Health’s Home Health and Hospice as the Hospice Medical Director.

The opportunity features:

  • A flexible four-day workweek and full-time benefits (.8 FTE)
  • Ability to lead an experienced team of palliative care providers dedicated to quality hospice care
  • Ability to participate in direct clinical practice
  • Ability to lead education models for community physicians as well as the Home Health and Hospice team

The medical director/team physician has overall responsibility for the medical direction of the care and treatment of patients and their families rendered by the hospice care team, and provides consultation and collaboration with the patient’s attending physician. The medical director provides medical management of patients and physician direction, as well as guidance to the hospice program, its staff, and volunteers, to ensure the maintenance of quality standards of care for patients and families. The medical director will also serve as a resource to educate practicing physicians and others engaged in healthcare services about the hospice program.

Ideal candidates will have five years of experience in a palliative care setting and be board certified in either palliative care or internal medicine with prior palliative care experience. Candidates who are certified as a hospice medical director will take priority. Collaborative candidates who are driven by quality, safety, patient satisfaction, and value are desired.

Baystate Hospice offers comfort and dignity at the end of life, when a cure is no longer possible and life expectancy is thought to be six months or less. Hospice services include skilled nursing care, advanced pain management and symptom control, pharmacy services, medical supplies and equipment, specialized physician oversight of plan of care, spiritual care, volunteer support, massage therapy, hospice aides to help with personal care, medical social work, bereavement support services, nutrition counseling, acute care hospitalization, and respite care — as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
