Internal Medicine - Pediatrics (Med/Peds)

The combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics program at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine (WMed) seeks a full-time, board-certified or board eligible Medicine-Pediatrics faculty to expand and enhance clinical services, research, and medical student and resident training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The program is well-integrated within the departments of Internal Medicine, and Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, each with separate categorical programs. Both departments have a diversity of community faculty as well as faculty employed by the medical school. The MedPeds residency program has 16 residents and fully accredited with all subspecialty care and tertiary care capabilities.

Candidates must have an MD/DO and strong interest and passion for medical student and resident education, and scholarly activities. Leadership and organizational skills are desirable. The candidate must be board-certified or board-eligible by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics (or the American Osteopathic Board) and be eligible for full licensure to practice in Michigan.

Depending upon interest and experience, this faculty position may have responsibility for oversight of all fourth year medical student clerkships in the department of Medicine.

WMed offers competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications.

In addition to teaching medical students and residents, this faculty member will have responsibility, working with individual clerkship directors, for oversight of the approximately 25 fourth-year medical student clerkships offered through the department of Medicine. All Medicine Pediatrics faculty participate in the education of medical students and residents, ongoing scholarly activities, and clinical services in the Internal Medicine and MedPeds clinics, which are supported by full-time medical social workers, dieticians, and dedicated nursing staff.

Additional responsibilities:

  • Participating in the systems of quality improvement, utilization review, and outcomes management
  • Participating in inpatient academic internal medicine clinical service
  • Working closely with the department chairs for:
  • Recruitment, selection, supervision, education, and evaluation of resident physicians
  • Strategic planning

  • Providing high quality instruction for medical education of students and residents as determined by the department chair
  • Other duties as assigned by the department chair

About Western Michigan University School of Medicine

As one of the newer US medical schools, WMed is an exciting environment to pursue an academic career. The medical school is a collaboration of Western Michigan University, which ranks among the 50 largest colleges and universities and among the top 100 national public doctoral universities in the US, and Kalamazoo's two teaching hospitals, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare. The medical school is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation supported by private gifts, clinical revenues, research activities, tuition, and endowment income. The program leading to the MD degree was accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in 2012, and the inaugural class began in 2014. The School of Medicine Clinics are housed in a modern 60,000 square foot clinical building on the Oakland Drive Campus and are accredited by The Joint Commission with recognition by National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as a Patient-Centered Medical Home. The 350,000 square foot educational building on the W.E. Upjohn MD Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo underwent a $68 million renovation and expansion project including a state-of-the-art Simulation Center. In 2016, an additional $10 million expansion created two floors supporting clinical and laboratory research, and the Innovation Center on the Parkview Campus became part of the medical school. There are more than 200 residents and fellows in eight residencies and two fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). WMed is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for continuing medical education.
