WORK SCHEDULE: Full-Time 

 

Geisinger Health System seeks an Adult Inpatient Medical Director, Psychiatry, to join the inpatient team at Geisinger Medical Center, located in Danville, Pennsylvania.

The BE/BC psychiatrist will join a psychiatry team of RN's, Clinical Social Workers, Case Workers, PA's and psychiatry residents in a 28-bed adult inpatient unit located within Geisinger Medical Center.    

 

Reports to: Director of Psychiatry

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      General control and oversight of the psychiatric inpatient program.

2.      Directing the Quality Improvement Program on the unit.

3.      Implementing and reviewing the psychiatric admission policies in conjunction with nursing administrator.

4.      Providing updates to the Director of Psychiatry on the overall functioning of the unit on a monthly basis .

5.      Reviewing the procedure for obtaining informed consent and the monitoring of correctly obtaining consent.

6.      Work with nursing administrator in discussing any problem employees and providing feedback when appropriate.

7.      Maintain staff privileges at Geisinger Medical Center, in accordance with hospital by-laws.

8.      Work with nurse administrator to operate the inpatient unit in a manner consistent with DPW standards for inpatient psychiatric facilities.

9.      Work with insurers and utilization review to obtain payment for services appropriately rendered at the unit

10.   Oversee Treatment Team, assuring that appropriately trained staff participate in team, using their unique skills and knowledge.

11.   Participate in the patient grievance and appeal process.

12.   Completing or assuring the completion of a thorough psychiatric evaluation of each new admission within twenty-four hours of admission.

13.   Oversee the coordination of discharge planning to provide for appropriate follow-up and after care prior to being discharged

14.   Works and collaborates with the nurse administrator on all important unit issues.

15.   Manage the work expectation and maintaining the clinical standards for all physicians assigned to work/cover the IP unit.

16.   Take part in establishing and achieving the budgetary expectations of the IP unit.

17.   Assure that call coverage is provided and the standards expected for coverage. 

18.   Oversees the training of residents and medical students while they are rotating on the unit. 

19.   Provides written evaluations of residents and medical students.

20.   Assumes other departmental duties as assigned by the Director of Psychiatry or Chairman of Psychiatry.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

MD or DO degree

Board Certification in Adult Psychiatry

At least five years of experience post residency in psychiatric practice

At least two years of experience or working on an inpatient psychiatric unit post residency

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to work on an inpatient unit with potentially aggressive patients.
