Chief, Radiology and Imaging Sciences Department

Are you interested in a truly unique leadership opportunity in radiology and imaging sciences?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) invites candidates with strong clinical, operational, leadership, and research credentials to apply for the position of Chief, Radiology and Imaging Sciences Department at the NIH Clinical Center, Bethesda, MD. The NIH Clinical Center is the largest hospital in the world totally dedicated to translational clinical research. The hospital maintains a 200-bed capacity that supports the intramural research programs of Institutes and Centers across the NIH. The hospital supports an extensive range of research participants who are patients with long standing relationships with their Institute’s care team. As a clinical hospital department chief, the incumbent will lead a department of about 128 staff members (including 25 radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians) in a complex clinical research setting.

Currently, there are about 1,600 clinical research studies in progress at the NIH Clinical Center. About half are studies of the natural history of disease, especially rare diseases, which often are not studied anywhere else. Most other studies are clinical trials, which often are the first tests of new drugs and therapies in patients. The clinical trials at the NIH Clinical Center are predominantly Phase I and Phase II, often first in human to test safety and efficacy.

The NIH Clinical Center Radiology and Imaging Sciences Department provides all diagnostic radiological examinations and support for the translational clinical research programs at the National Institutes of Health, offering remarkable opportunities for scientific collaboration. The Radiology and Imaging Sciences Department includes multiple imaging modalities including: Fluoroscopy, Computerized Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Interventional Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine. The department also houses the Laboratory of Diagnostic Radiology Research, the Center for Infectious Disease Imaging, Center for Interventional Oncology, and other independent Principal Investigator driven laboratories.

The Clinical Center is the epicenter of intramural research and collaboration at the NIH. The individual selected for this position will have an opportunity to foster an environment that supports innovation, including scholarly activities that lead to increased patient safety and optimal clinical outcomes, and that ensure clinical research goals are obtained while implementing the principles of high reliability in healthcare at the CC. The incumbent will have opportunities to integrate clinical and scientific goals and objectives into the practice of clinical research service.

We seek an individual who possesses exceptional communication skills, and a high level of expertise leading, consulting, and advising a diverse workforce and running patient care operations in a complex hospital setting. The ability to partner and provide sound guidance at all levels within a complex clinical research setting is key in the performance of duties associated with this position.

Candidates must be experienced and proven leaders with substantive technical, practice, and strategic management skill sets in a clinical research setting. The ideal candidate should possess an MD degree and be board certified in radiology or another relevant clinical area and have demonstrated experience in a primarily clinical setting. A track record of excellence in research collaboration or a contemporary independent research program is desirable. The successful applicant will need to demonstrate the willingness to contribute to the success of investigators and clinicians throughout the NIH. Candidates with outstanding research accomplishments may be eligible for tenure within the NIH Intramural Research Program.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life, and long term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available. The vacancy announcement will post on August 23, 2017 and close on September 1, 2017. Applications must be submitted via: https://www.usajobs.gov. The vacancy ID is NIH-CC-DH-17-1984329.
