The UAB School of Medicine is seeking a visionary and enthusiastic leader to serve as its next chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM). The department has been a part of the School of Medicine since its inception in 1975, and has been a recognized leader in the fields of clinical care, premedical education, practice-based research, and student health services. DFCM is home to highly-trained faculty and staff who provide clinical, educational and research activities in Family Medicine for the entire UAB community. The department's educational mission continues through its work with medical students in all four years of medical school, with a family medicine clerkship and a number of special topics courses in addition to faculty mentorship of student scholarly activity. Clinical services are available for all ages in the Family Medicine Faculty Clinic and for all UAB students in the Student Health Services Division.

The successful candidate will be a physician with progressive administrative and operational experience, preferably in an academic medical center setting; possess the ability to articulate a clear vision for guiding and preparing the department for the coming changes to value based care and current trends in the field of family medicine; possess a track record in scholarly achievement and prior success in obtaining extramural funding, and have an understanding of and enthusiasm for the tripartite mission of the UAB School of Medicine, along with knowledge of the culture of academic medical institutions in general. Lastly, the new chair will be a builder of programs, with proven experience in providing strong leadership, oversight, and strategic direction.

The chair's major responsibilities will include oversight of the department faculty and ensuring high levels of interactive clinical service, teaching and research missions; managing the budget for the department; faculty recruitment to support efficiency and care for UAB and Birmingham communities, and Birmingham-area family medicine residency; and oversee the development of a UAB Family Medicine Residency Program in the Birmingham metropolitan area.

With more than 1,200 full-time faculty and almost 1,200 medical and graduate students, the UAB School of Medicine has grown into a world class, research intensive school consistently ranked in the top 30 of NIH ranked Schools of Medicine, and also in the top 12 for rural and primary care. The School of Medicine includes 26 academic departments, some rank in the top 10 nationally among academic departments in funding from the NIH. Its historical success in its teaching mission is reflected in the fact that 80% of physicians in Alabama owe their training to the School of Medicine.
