The Opportunity

The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Neurology. The successful applicant must qualify for a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, have an outstanding record of academic accomplishments, and demonstrate excellence in patient care, education, and research. The search committee will evaluate evidence of the ability to lead, mentor, and manage an academic unit in a university-based setting. The Chair plays a pivotal role in building and supervising clinical programs that are part of the Augusta University enterprise. The Chair reports to the Dean and will serve as the department’s academic and administrative leader, providing direction in research; educational programs; faculty recruitment, retention, and development; budget management and oversight; and strategic planning. The successful candidate must articulate a vision that enhances the excellence of the department, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across the University, and undertakes new initiatives that maintain and expand the existing departmental, clinical, research, and teaching missions.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications for the position include MD, DO, MD/PhD, or DO/PhD degrees, current board certification in neurology, and academic accomplishments that merit tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. The candidate must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at Augusta University.

The Medical College of Georgia educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, as well as three regional clinical campuses for third-and fourth-year students and a second four-year campus in Athens, Georgia in partnership with the University of Georgia. The state’s medical school also offers clinical training in more than 200 sites across the state providing students experience in the full spectrum of medicine, from tertiary/quaternary care hospitals to small-town solo practices. More than 51 percent of MCG graduates remain in Georgia to practice, well above the average retention rate of 39 percent. In 2016, MCG graduated more than twice the number of physicians going into primary care and core specialties – like family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, and general surgery – than any other medical school in the state of Georgia.

Our researchers and clinicians focus on illnesses that affect most of Georgia and America’s children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine, and genomics. They also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 80 clinics and hospitals statewide.

About the Department of Neurology

As our Department aims for the highest quality of clinical care, the best training experience for our medical students, residents, and Fellows, and cutting-edge research, with 26 faculty, 18 residents, and 3-4 fellows, we have a strong foundation in general neurology and neurological subspecialties including: stroke/telestroke, general/headache, movement disorders, neurocognitive disorders, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, multiple sclerosis, clinical neurophysiology, neuropsychology, neuro-critical care, interventional neurology, and pediatric neurology. We are the hub for a pioneering 29-spoke telestroke network and the Joint Commission certified Comprehensive Stroke Center (first in Georgia), a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence, a NAEC Level 4 Epilepsy Center, and the only ALS Association Certified Center in Georgia. The Department’s teaching mission includes medical students, residents, and fellows undergoing advanced training. Research activities in the Department include both basic science and clinical research. Additionally, our medical school has the resources in place to ensure that our residents have enriched comprehensive residency training, while working closely with subspecialists from other sections including general neurosurgery, neuroradiology, neuro-otology, neuro-ophthalmology, functional neurosurgery (deep brain stimulation and epilepsy surgery), and neuro-gastroenterology. Our facility houses a wide variety of other specialties including a Level I trauma center, and seven ICUs (neurology, shock trauma, surgery, pediatric, neonatal, cardiology, and medical), which affords our residents the opportunity to see a comprehensive variety of conditions and also to consult with a wide variety of in-house specialists.
