Job Details

Associate Director for Clinical Research
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)
Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID)

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader for the position of Associate Director for Clinical Research, within the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID). DMID, which is one of four extramural divisions within NIAID, is the lead extramural division responsible for research on all infectious human pathogens, other than HIV, and all infectious diseases other than AIDS, including biodefense. DMID has taken on a critical role as the lead component of NIH in efforts to develop countermeasures for potential agents of bioterrorism and emerging infectious diseases.

DMID’s clinical research program has grown exponentially to comprise numerous clinical trial networks and an extensive portfolio of clinical research and interventional clinical trials evaluating vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics. In addition to a robust general infectious diseases clinical research program, DMID has an aggressive biodefense research program to develop diagnostics, vaccines, and treatments to protect the U.S. population. A large focus of the DMID biodefense program is advanced product development with a concomitant goal-oriented, milestone-driven critical clinical development path.

DMID seeks exceptional candidates for the Associate Director for Clinical Research position.

The Associate Director for Clinical Research reports directly to the director of DMID and serves as a key advisor on all clinical research issues. The Associate Director for Clinical Research is responsible for:

  • Designing, implementing, providing oversight for, and maintaining a robust clinical research program in DMID.
  • Overseeing the development, standardization, implementation, and execution of policies, procedures, and standards of conduct to ensure that DMID’s clinical research program is conducted in full compliance with all applicable regulations and policies and meets established standards of quality, integrity, and ethics.
  • Overseeing all regulatory activities, including interactions with the Food and Drug Administration, and industry partnerships in support of product development and clinical trials sponsored by DMID.
  • Overseeing the coordination of planning, implementation, and evaluation of all biodefense (including pandemic and interpandemic influenza) and other infectious diseases clinical research activities to ensure an integrated clinical research agenda.
  • Representing DMID in trans-federal agency HHS research efforts to advance the clinically-related national infectious disease extramural research mission and goals.

The Associate Director for Clinical Research leads and directs the Office of Clinical Research Affairs, Office of Regulatory Affairs, and Office of Clinical Research Resources in focusing on designing strategically aggressive clinical evaluation of countermeasures in biodefense and emerging infectious disease, as well as analysis, assessment, and prioritization of the DMID-wide clinical research agenda. In addition, the position analyzes and plays a lead role in NIAID’s response to opportunities for the clinical development of diagnostics, vaccines, and other biologicals and therapeutic interventions.

Qualifications

The position requires an individual to be a U.S. citizen with an MD and expertise and comprehensive experience in clinical trials processes, procedures, and implementation in infectious diseases, as well as knowledge of relevant regulatory issues and standards related to conduct and oversight. Expertise is required to support the expanding DMID product development and clinical research portfolio.

Salary is commensurate with experience, and a full package of benefits is available, including retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave, and Thrift Savings Plan (401k equivalent).
