The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) and the Carle Health System (Carle) have embarked on an exciting endeavor by creating the nation's first engineering-based college of medicine. In partnership, Carle and Illinois are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the first permanent Executive Associate Dean of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. A member of the Dean's senior leadership team, the Executive Associate Dean will work strategically to build the new enterprise into a world-class center for teaching, research, and clinical care.

The Executive Associate Dean will develop strategies to position Carle Illinois College of Medicine as a global leader in engineering- and technology-based medical education and healthcare delivery research. This will include strategy in support of the College's case-driven, problem-based, active-learning curricular environment. The individual in the Executive Associate Dean position will additionally serve as chief diversity officer of the College and will report directly to the inaugural Dean, Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

This is a rare opportunity to join an enthusiastically engaged, multi-disciplinary group of academic scholars, health care professionals, and specialists in medical education at the intersection of engineering, biological, and clinical sciences. It is planned that the individual in this administrative role will have full-time, benefits eligible, University employment, including opportunities for concurrent appointment in another University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign college and/or the Carle Health System.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The start date will be as soon as possible after the close of the search. If the individual selected to serve as Executive Associate Dean is additionally qualified to hold faculty status in the medical college, then consideration will be made for a zero percent time non-tenured faculty appointment.

Responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Serve as a member of the Carle Illinois College of Medicine senior leadership team and advise the Dean on strategic planning for engineering and technology related to the college's educational mission and research interests.
  • Oversee strategic academic partnerships and corporate relations.
  • Ensure the effective representation of the medical school throughout the community, the state, and the academic/medical communities throughout the country.
  • Collaborate with other members of the college's senior leadership team to recommend, establish and implement policies and procedures to ensure a rewarding engineering-based medical education experience aligned with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation.
  • Participate in relevant standing educational committees and meet regularly with the education related associate deans in the College.
  • Participate in the hiring of faculty and administrative staff involved in the curriculum and administration as needed.
  • Model and encourage positive inter-professional relationships bridging the college's private/public organization and its missions, cultivating positive relationships with community health partners; seek out and support unique college partnerships with industry or other business partners and foundations.
  • Serve as the chief diversity officer of the College; oversee the area of diversity in the college's student admissions, faculty, and staff. Collaborate within and outside the college to cultivate and support diversity on an ongoing basis, including career development and long-term retention.
  • Collaborate to develop and implement strategies for Carle Illinois College of Medicine graduates in career opportunities and research trajectories.
  • Assist in the college's advancement opportunities and development.
  • Act on behalf of the Dean when requested by the Dean.

 

Education requirements:

  • An M.D.; D.O.; or Ph.D. degree in a discipline pertinent to the intersection of engineering, biological and clinical sciences is required.

Experience, skills and abilities requirements:

  • The candidate must hold credentials at the level of senior faculty status with an established record of successful research, student programs, faculty promotion and recognition, collaboration and experience in leadership roles in a research-intensive academic institution.
  • This position requires a record of successively advanced leadership roles evidencing skills and abilities to communicate successfully with diverse stakeholders including faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, students, benefactors, members of the professional community, business partners and potential research collaborators.
  • The position requires a strong familiarity with how to initiate, grow and sustain interest of scholars and industry leaders in inter-disciplinary novel approaches to solving biomedical and/or engineering and/or clinical problems. It is essential to engage skills relevant to successful strategic communication with diverse stakeholders including faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, students, benefactors, members of the professional community, business partners and potential research collaborators.
  • It is preferred that an excellent candidate will have a record of successfully engaging external sponsorship for research conducted in an academic institution.
  • An established record of inter-disciplinary scholarly activity, documented through collaborations in research, teaching, publishing or other scholarly activities is preferred, as is an established record of mentorship of faculty and students, supporting principles of life-long learning.
  • The excellent candidate will have a record that documents skills and abilities to create and perform research with an outcome of discovery or extended knowledge that, in turn, directly benefits advancement in medicine, health care delivery, patient care, and wellness.
