JOB SUMMARY:

A Research Scientist is an experienced post-doctoral researcher seeking continued growth and development as an independent academic scientist. This position provides that opportunity with a specific focus on cardiovascular disease research in Geisinger's Department of Imaging Science and Innovation. This individual will be responsible for conducting and managing a number of defined research projects in collaboration with and under the supervision of an Imaging Science Investigator (PI). These projects leverage world-class data resources at Geisinger (Electronic Health Records, genetic sequencing, access to historical imaging databases) to address translational and precision health problems in cardiology. Current areas of interest for this research include: quantification of cardiac biomechanics from advanced medical imaging in relation to human health and disease; the integration of medical imaging and cardiogenomics to better understand inherited cardiomyopathies; and using machine learning to build better predictive models of heart disease.

 

This person will function as a technical or intellectual resource to the PI, and will work as a member of a team to help oversee and assist the work of junior researchers (Research Assistants, Post-doctoral Fellows) in the

execution of these projects. This person will also be expected to take a primary role in the preparation of manuscripts for peer reviewed publication, and will assist the PI in preparing grant proposals to secure external funding.

Directly accountable to Department of Imaging Science and Innovation Investigator(s).

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*1. Conducts collaborative data collection and/or analysis related to a specific research project.

*2. Responsible for completion of objectives of funded external grants, preparation of completed work for publication, gathering preliminary data for grant preparation, and (at the discretion of the supervising scientist) contributing to the preparation of grant submissions.

*3. Acquires and maintains active understanding of literature pertinent to ongoing research projects in order to appropriately interpret findings and develop new protocols for the laboratory.

*4. Responsible for developing experimental design, analyzing results, and planning the next logical experiment in collaboration with supervising scientist.

*5. Responsible for testing developed algorithms and ensuring the validity of all analyses.

*6. Maintains and completes records of the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions from all studies and maintains documentation of all developed algorithms.

7. May oversee or advise other personnel in the laboratory or research center at the discretion of the supervising scientist.

*8. Participates in research meetings to present, explain, and discuss research conducted by the laboratory or center group.

9. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Ph.D. in biomedical sciences, computer sciences, or engineering (or related discipline) or M.D required.

Minimum of three years relevant experience required.

Minimum of 5 peer reviewed publications required
