The University of Florida Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine is seeking applicants for Medical Intensive Care Unit Medical Director. The MICU Medical Director devotes 25% of their time to the daily operations of the MICU within UF Health Shands Hospital. Some of the primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, implement, and enforce MICU protocols, policy, and procedures.
  • Meet with MICU nursing staff to review bed control and manage MICU bed needs and facilitate transfer of patient in and out of the MICU.
  • Review patient safety reports.
  • Coordinate care with the ED physicians and AOD to manage/facilitate admission and transfer of patient in and out of the MICU.
  • Supervise educational effort in the MICU to housestaff, medical students, PAs, etc.
  • Serve as institutional representative on ICU improvement committees, departmental committees, patient care committees, etc.
  • Serve as the divisional representative for MICU expansion.

Applicants must be board-certified or board eligible in Pulmonary & Critical Care, and be eligible for a Florida Medical License. The annual salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and education.

The UF Department of Medicine is a nationally renowned clinical and research team that has more 300 faculty in 11 Divisions: Cardiovascular Medicine; Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism; Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition; General Internal Medicine; Hematology & Oncology; Hospital Medicine; Infectious Diseases & Global Medicine; Nephrology, Hypertension & Renal Transplantation; Palliative Care; Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine; and Rheumatology & Clinical Immunology. We also houses multiple major specialty care and research centers,including the Clinical and Translational Research Institute, the Center for Inflammation and Mucosal Immunology, the UF Health Integrative Medicine Program, the Cell Therapy Research Network, The Institute of Therapeutic Innovation and the Center for Regenerative Medicine. The department also plays major leadership roles in the UF Health Cancer Center and the UF Diabetes Institute.

The Department supports nearly 100 Internal Medicine residents and 90 fellows in 16 distinct fellowship programs, spanning each division. The department has 15 external clinic sites, plus multiple satellite clinic locations, and runs all Internal Medicine clinical services at both the UF Health Shands Teaching Hospital (950+ beds) and the adjacent Malcolm Randall VA Hospital (350 beds). Medicine services in UF Health Shands hospital include: MICU, Intermediate Medical Care Unit, Hospital Medicine, General Medicine teaching services, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Malignant Hematology & BMT, Oncology, Medical Observation Unit, the Endoscopy Center, the Bronchoscopy Center, Medical Cardiology, the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and the CardiacIntensive Care Unit. Departmental faculty also serve as Medical Directors for Heart, Lung, Liver, Kidney, and Pancreatic transplantation. The department admits over 20,000 patients a year to UF Health Shands, and sees more than 160,000 out-patients annually.  

Departmental faculty hold over $24 M in annual NIH funding (direct costs), ranking 40th in the Blue Ridge Institute’s survey of all internal medicine departments in FY14. There are 11 faculty that serve on NIH or VA study sections, and another 105 that serve on a national medical society committee. There are 95 departmental faculty that serve on editorial boards of journals, and 90 faculty with peer-reviewed extra-mural funding. In addition, departmental faculty published 698 papers and 63 book chapters in FY14.
