The Chief Medical Director of Occupational Health serves as the managing physician, leader, and advocate for internal Occupational health, and external retail and corporate Occupational Health and Wellness across all YNHHS sites, including those located within Delivery Network campuses, off campus facilities, and corporate health units. The Chief Medical Director will set strategic direction in collaboration with NEMG Population Health, Employee Population Health, Executive Leaders, and Service Line leadership on the integration of our programs. Alongside the Director of Employee Population Health Solutions, functions as a key member of the YNHHS Occupational Health Executive team, providing thought leadership, setting strategic direction, and promoting the System vision. Manages all Occupational Health clinicians, including Medical Directors, Associate Medical Directors, and hospital, satellite, and corporate health unit-based physicians, NPs, and PAs. With support from the Occupational Health Director reports, this position is responsible for leading the alignment and standardization of clinical policies, procedures, practices, protocols, outcomes, and quality assurance initiatives across the different Delivery Networks employee sites, external Occupational Health, and retail sites.

The Chief Medical Director Occupational Health establishes and maintains effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders; including delivery network leaders, external clients, and physician stakeholders. In addition to System medical oversight, this position also provides day-to-day clinical services for clinical sites, ensuring that all services delivered are of the highest quality. Efficiently and effectively deploys all Occupational Health and Corporate Health providers, with responsibility for all provider scheduling, including vacations, educational leave, and staffing on a day-to-day and hour-to-hour basis. S/he holds an MD from an accredited medical school and is board certified in Occupational Medicine with 7+ years' experience in a combination of Occupational Health settings (e.g., hospital/NFP, private, corporate health unit). He or she also has extensive experience managing multiple high volume sites, providers and business/P&L responsibilities. Masters in Healthcare Administration or Masters in Business Administration is highly desirable.

1.    Provides clinical administration and Leadership of all Occupational Health Services
1.1 Sets Strategic direction with Director for internal and external Occupational Health for YNHHS, and other strategic partners with the Yale University Employee Health Department and the Yale Occupational Environmental Medicine Program and the YNHHS Medical Director Wellness and Employee Population Health.
1.2 Works with Occupational Health Director to develop strategic partnerships with our external clients that includes programming from all of our departments depending on the client requirements.
1.3 Responsible for P&L and downstream revenue management.
1.4 Creates model of YNHHS clinical cross-coverage and develops procedures related to triage, consults, admissions, inter-service issues, etc.
1.5 Responsible for problem solving related to triage, consults, admissions, and business and service issues. Serves as the Medical representative for EMR and Occupational Health electronic database policies, procedures, and workflows

2.    Ensures standardization of clinical practices across YNHHS Occupational Health and leads Occupational Health Medical Directors in analyzing and formulating common YNHHS standards (policies, procedures, practices, workflows, outcomes, etc.) across practice locations. Ensures standards meet or exceed local national benchmarks.
2.1 Establishes metrics for individual and system-wide provider productivity and quality
2.2 Develops a process to conduct Quality Assurance of all clinical services
2.3 Reviews, as needed, cases seen as part of Occupational Health Office activities. (eg., history of the injury/medical problems(s) or the findings, diagnoses, treatment plan, any limitations or restrictions, discharge, and follow-up)

3.    Establishes and leads monthly Medical Director meetings to discuss shared practices, strategic initiatives, operational issues, financial performance, and review cases as needed
3.1 Manages all YNHHS Occupational Health clinicians including physicians, PAs, NPs, and radiological technicians
3.2 Performs periodic evaluations of all clinicians in the department following YNHHS guidelines
3.3 Performs chart reviews of all supervised clinicians in accordance with a common YNHHS QA process. Delegates supervision of staff physician and midlevel practitioners to Medical Director reports and YNHHS Executive Team as appropriate
3.4 Counsels and ensures that all clinicians follow customary and usual clinical guidelines (standardized across YNHHS) appropriate for the illness or injury

4.    Leads the vision for YNHHS Occupational Health Forms relationships and/or partnerships with key stakeholders (e.g. employers, YNHHS employees, Human Resources leadership, Delivery Network executives, payers, and the government) and attends Relevant stakeholder meetings
4.1 Defines and establishes leadership in appropriate individual service lines within Occupational Health. Frequently visits companies in effort to maintain relationships and ensure Occupational Health care needs are being met
4.2 Presents educational programs including clinical supervision and instruction of students and house staff. Participates in lecture series and conferences and programs geared toward client companies.
4.3 Partners with YNHHS Occupational Health and Wellness leaders and sales team to present offerings to potential employer clients, as needed
4.4 Available for urgent medical concerns and sign off when needed by YNHHS Wellness staff.
4.5 Participates in RFP submissions as needed

5.    Provides support for YNHHS Workers' Compensation initiatives Works with Medical Director
5.1 Implements Best Practice standards for Medical management
5.2 Sets clear expectations as it relates to medical management of care of the injured employee as it relates to lost time, restricted time, and return to work policies
5.3 Responsible for review and approval of standards, outcomes, return-to-work processes, and evaluations of temporary and permanent disability for employers as well as care for the injured employees in the System
5.4 Assumes responsibility for medical direction of physicians conducting examinations, disability evaluations, and return to work exams
5.5 Periodically meets with company representatives to review workers' compensation issues, experience, and data
5.6 Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as indicated in the delineation of privileges

6.    Works as a staff physician at offices as needed to maintain proper patient flow

7.    Works with HR and the operating supervisor to perform complex Fitness for Duty evaluations

8.    Will be available for timely access when requested by contracted companies. Carries a cell phone for access by client companies for which contracts have been secured to provide consulting services

9.    Leads special projects and performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION: Holds a degree of MD or DO from an accredited medical school, has completed appropriate residency training and is Board Certified in Occupational Medicine; He or she will also obtain any required certifications as may be desired by YNHHS to perform the Chief Medical Officer duties such as MRO certification status and or FMSCA certification as necessary. Masters in Healthcare Administration or Business Administration is highly desirable.

EXPERIENCE: At least 7+ years' experience providing the basic clinical services in a combination of Occupational Health settings (hospitals/NFPs, private settings, and corporate health units). He or she will also demonstrate experience in managing multiple high volume sites and other clinicians (MDs, DOs, PAs, and/or NPs). Experience providing consultations to large corporate employers is preferred. Experience with free standing Urgent Care delivery and management is highly desirable. Experience with developing a business model for direct contracting to external corporate clients preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS: Clinical skills commensurate with this position to include an extensive knowledge of Occupational Medicine, Wellness, Executive Health, and Workers Compensation protocols. He/she will also have excellent communication skills both written and verbal in order to interact with workers, company executives, and Delivery Network administrators. The Chief Medical Officer will also provide consulting services to local and national companies as required. It is also expected that the Chief Medical Officer will support marketing efforts and visit client companies at their work site frequently. Personal Skill set of business acumen and being politically savvy to meet many competing demands required.

ACCOUNTABILITY: Responsible for maintaining the highest quality of care in all YNHHS clinics, both retail and employee-based. Outcomes measurements of quality care parameters include patient satisfaction, client company satisfaction, clinical outcomes, and financial metrics. He or she is responsible for investigating any clinical complaints with the goal of resolving the issue and setting new procedures to avoid reoccurrence.

COMPLEXITY: This position oversees all Occupational Health clinicians and assures that the standard of care exceeds national and state guidelines. He or she works with Infection Control, HR and other clinical departments to minimize injuries and maintain the safety of all YNHHS employees. He or she works with the YNHHS Occupational Health Executive Team to provide services in an efficient and cost effective manner with the goal of a neutral or positive P&L.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Performs clinical duties on YNHHS campuses. Makes routine visits to any of multiple YNHHS Occupational Health locations, including hospital-, satellite-, or client-based sites. Supports marketing efforts, frequently visiting current and prospective clients at their work site.
