The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Surgery. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair will have primary responsibility for the direction and oversight of one of the most preeminent departments in the country.

The Chair of the Department of Surgery will lead the continued growth and development of the Department, maintaining its strengths and building toward further successes. The Chair will help the Department fulfill its mission of developing the next generation of surgical leaders, providing outstanding, cost-effective, and compassionate clinical care, and advancing scientific knowledge and clinical practice through research.

About the Department of Surgery

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold:
1.    To develop the next generation of leaders in surgery;
2.    To provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and
3.    To make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research.

The UCSF Department of Surgery comprises approximately 86 full-time clinical faculty and 18 full-time research faculty The Department comprises seven divisions: Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery.

UCSF surgeons provide care at locations throughout greater San Francisco including: UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus (Moffitt-Long Hospital), UCSF Medical Center at Mt. Zion, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay (UCSF Bakar Cancer Hospital and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco), Zuckerberg-San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, San Francisco VA Medical Center, and Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland. In addition, its residents rotate through Kaiser Permanente and California Pacific Medical Center.

The Department excels in all areas of research. Its broad portfolio of basic science and clinical outcomes research includes fetal surgery, transplantation immunology, tissue engineering, immunogenetics, vascular biology, trauma prevention, wound healing, genomics, cancer biology, and neurobiology of digestive diseases.

The successful candidate will have exceptional administrative and organizational skills and a national reputation as a leader in academic medicine in the areas of medical education, clinical care, and research. The individual chosen will have major responsibilities in the overall direction of this distinguished department. MD, PhD, or equivalent degree required.
