Duties & Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Chief of Medicine, the Medical Director of Urgent Care is responsible for oversight and management of the delivery of high quality, compassionate, cost effective health care in the Urgent Care Clinic, which provides episodic and urgent medical and mental health care to students, faculty, staff, dependents, and retirees. In collaboration with the Chief of Medicine, the Chief of Counseling and Mental Health Services (CAMHS), the Chief of Nursing, and the Director of Ambulatory Practice Operations, sets the vision and goals for the Urgent Care Department at Harvard University Health Services (HUHS). The Medical Director oversees the quality of provider work, ensuring adherence to the protocols of the Clinic and accepted standards of care.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Establishes and implements processes for monitoring the quality of care provided by Urgent Care clinicians to include chart reviews
  • Reviews and responds to clinical issues
  • Working with nursing leadership, establishes effective clinical workflows and provides direct clinical care across timeframes that Urgent Care services are open
  • Recruits and hires physician staff for Urgent Care
  • Collaborates with Chief Medical Officer, Finance, and Human Resources to establish physician variable compensation measures
  • Determines clinical staffing needs by shift and works with practice manager to ensure coverage
  • Ensures compliance with HUHS, state, regulatory, and accrediting bodies as well as organizational policies and procedures regarding the delivery of health care
  • Acts as a liaison to the College and Administrative Board on students with medical issues that necessitate leaves of absence or accommodations.
  • Interfaces with local hospital Emergency Department directors
  • Spends 50% of his/her time seeing patients in the Urgent Care clinic.

Collaborates Effectively With and Supports:

  • The Urgent Care Practice Manager and Nurse Leader in the establishment of annual departmental goals, including financial, quality, and customer service goals; measurement and improvement of provider, patient and staff satisfaction and daily problem solving; implementation of policies and procedures
  • The Urgent Care Practice Manager to ensure completion of the clinician schedules in a timely and complete manner
  • The Chief of Counseling and Mental Health Services and Behavioral Health to establish processes and protocols and monitor/coordinate the clinical mental health services provided in Urgent Care
  • Department of Medicine to ensure coordination of care between Urgent Care and Internal Medicine
  • Clinical leaders within HUHS, as well as with administrative leaders at the College.

Basic Qualifications:

Graduate of a U.S. - based residency program with current licensure in Massachusetts. Board certified in at least one of the following: Internal Medicine; Family Practice; combined Medicine-Pediatrics or Emergency Medicine. Current BLS/ACLS certification. 

Additional Qualifications:

At least three years' experience as an urgent care and/or emergency physician. Substantive professional experience in clinical management, managed care quality improvement, supervision and clinical protocol development preferred but not required. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to provide leadership. Working knowledge of the primary care model.
