Job summary

The Executive Director of the Student Health Service (SHS) for the Medical Center Campus is directly responsible for Columbia University’s health-related programs and services for health science students. The Executive Director administers an innovative and comprehensive plan that includes the advancement of student health and the management of the programs, services, staff, and facilities of the SHS. Will also hold a faculty appointment at the Columbia University Medical Center at the Assistant or Associate level, dependent on experience.

The Executive Director is a member of the faculty of Columbia University Medical Center and fulfills the academic and service responsibilities for his or her specialty. Faculty title and rank is determined by the experience and expertise of the Executive Director. The Executive Director works closely with the deans and associate deans of the health sciences schools (Medical, Nursing, Dental, and Public Health), and students and graduate students in the biomedical sciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and the institute for human nutrition programs to advance the health of students and promote their academic achievement.

Summary of essential job functions

  • Direct the programs, services, personnel, finances, administration, and facilities of the SHS, which include medical, mental health, wellness, and administrative services.
  • Manage the development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of clinical, psychological, and prevention programs and services for health sciences students, with specific attention to the particular needs of students in each of the schools.
  • Provide clinical care in SHS.
  • Ensure the provision of effective health education, health promotion, and prevention programs for students in all the health sciences schools.
  • Direct planning, quality assurance, and continuous improvement activities for the SHS.
  • Manage the finances of the SHS – including the student health fee, development, and approval of the annual SHS budget, and financial planning and performance.
  • Manage the infrastructure of the SHS, including facilities, information technology, the electronic health record, and equipment.
  • Supervise the space development and implementation strategy for a new SHS space.
  • Recruit, hire, and supervise senior staff members, including administrators and clinicians, of the SHS, and direct the provision and management of its other human resources.
  • Build strong and effective relationships with students, student organizations, and student affairs deans and program directors at CUMC.
  • Collaborate regarding insurance coverage and arrangements for Columbia’s health insurance plan for health sciences students; monitor the performance and quality of that program. Understand health care reform and its impact on health insurance and the provision of services to students.
  • Provide regular reports on the health status and needs of students, the utilization of SHS programs and services, and the services provided through the health insurance plan.
  • Academic responsibilities include direct patient care, the supervision and teaching of residents, interns, and fellows and students and direct participation in Departmental Activities.
  • Oversight of SHS website.
  • Oversight of electronic health record and its implications on quality patient care.

Minimum requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine; additional preparation in public health, public administration, or business administration, or equivalent experience required.
  • Full and unrestricted license to practice in the State of New York.
  • Board-certified or eligible.
  • Proven experience in health administration or healthcare management.
  • Previous clinical and administrative experience in college health, employee/occupational health services, and/or corporate or organizational medical/health promotion services is preferred.

Abilities required

The Executive Director must have sound knowledge of and be effective in, managing health care systems, health care financing, health insurance, evidence-based clinical practice, multidisciplinary health care, and community health models. His or her experience, scholarship, or training must provide qualifications for appointment as a member of the faculty of the CUMC. The Executive Director must have a documented record of administrative and organizational skills and must be a capable and effective advocate for student health needs. Ideally, The Executive Director should also have knowledge and experience in corporate, institutional, or not-for-profit employee and occupational health services.
