Geriatric Fellowship and Hospital Medicine Program

Northwell Medicine Service Line is now recruiting candidates to join our Enhanced Geriatric Fellowship. The field of geriatrics is seeking to develop alternative pathways to attract, retain, educate, and develop leaders in geriatric medicine.

This innovative training model combines the acquisition of the geriatric skill-set through an accredited geriatric fellowship curriculum, with the practical – and remunerated – experience of working within an academic Hospital Medical Group (HMG).

This is an ACGME approved geriatric fellowship to be completed over a two-year period rather than the traditional 1-year model, allowing the following components to be integrated into the program:

  • Ongoing responsibilities as a hospitalist attending for the dual purpose of providing the trench experience (hands-on clinical experience) as well as financial support to incentivize young physicians to acquire the geriatric skills they will need in the tomorrow’s continuum of care.
  • As an option, fellows can acquire knowledge in  pedagogy and leadership skills through Hofstra University's new Master of Science in Health Professions, with the ultimate goal of developing true leaders in the field of geriatric medicine.

Upon completion of their 2-year combined geriatric fellowship/hospitalist program, graduating physicians are positioned to work in programs across Northwell Health, which recognizes a focus on transitions of care for the elderly across the continuum.  Graduating physicians are also better fitted with the leadership abilities needed to develop models of care to fill the current gaps for the geriatric patient, such as hospitalist programs for nursing homes (SNFists). This program model supports the growth of hospitalists as key agents of change as they expand their role across settings.
