The VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to direct the Primary Care Service Line.

Primary Care at VABHS encompasses three principal campuses at Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, and Brockton and five community based outpatient clinics. A total of 54 patient aligned care teams (PACT) comprising a provider, nurse coordinator, health tech, or LPN and medical support assistant provide patients a fully implemented medical home that includes integrated behavioral health services. The VABHS PC Service line is implementing a care transformation based on principles of whole health and patient-centered care. The Director of Primary Care is responsible for diverse supporting programs, including Home Telehealth, Home Based Primary Care, Women’s Health, a telephone call center, Homeless PACT, and smoking cessation and weight reduction programs. Medical students, internal medicine residents, nursing students and residents, and other allied health trainees participate in care, including in continuity of care clinics.

The ideal candidate should have a strong track record of leadership in internal medicine and primary care and in academic program development. Major goals for this position include the implementation of an open access model for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care, expanded use of telemedicine and connected health modalities, the enhancement of training programs, and the growth of health services research in Primary Care. Academic achievements should be commensurate with faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine or higher at Harvard Medical School (HMS) or Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM).

VABHS is the major tertiary referral center for veterans from throughout New England. VABHS is strongly affiliated with HMS and BUSM and draws trainees from all of the major Boston teaching hospitals. VABHS is the nation’s largest recipient of VA research funds and ranks among the top three VA facilities in total research funding. VABHS also trains annually more than 3400 physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.

The position requires US citizenship and an MD or DO degree with licensure. Board certification in Internal Medicine is strongly preferred. Recruitment/Relocation incentive may be authorized for highly qualified candidates.
