The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics. Founded in 1765, the School of Medicine is the oldest, and one of the finest medical schools in the United States and prides itself on leadership in biomedical research, medical education, and patient care. Today there are 10 basic science and 18 clinical departments in the School. The Department of Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics is one of the most distinguished pharmacology departments in the country and has a rich tradition of which its faculty and trainees are proud. There is a mutually supportive environment and sense of community which all enjoy.

The science of systems pharmacology encompasses the most fundamental aspects of basic research, from mechanistic, discovery-based science to in vivo studies in animal models to clinical investigation. The Department provides the academic home for a highly accomplished and interactive group of investigators whose research spans many domains, including the discovery of new drugs, the investigation of how drugs work, and the use of drugs to probe mechanisms of disease. Over the past decade, the traditional strengths of the Department in neuropharmacology have been expanded considerably and there are now robust established programs in cardiovascular pharmacology and cancer pharmacology. Genomics and proteomics have become increasingly important tools and systems approaches are used throughout the Department from single cell to population scale approaches to parsing variability in drug response. These interests have attracted a large number of faculty with expertise in cell signaling, spectroscopy, and models of human disease. The Department is at the forefront of this discipline, ranking first for NIH funding amongst such Departments for the past decade.

The Department’s mission is amplified through synergistic interactions with the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, the world’s first such institute, which anteceded and influenced the launch of the NIH’s Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program and similar initiatives in many developed nations. Departmental faculty also lead other outward facing centers and institutes including the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology and the Center for Nanomedicine and Targeted Therapeutics.

The Department is also home to a growing Graduate Group in Pharmacological Sciences and distinct programs have been established in pharmacogenetics, cell signaling, cancer pharmacology, cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology, pharmacological chemistry, and environmental health. Students train with interdisciplinary faculty who are pharmacologists, biochemists, neuroscientists, and cell and molecular biologists.

The Chair will provide vision and leadership for the Department. Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD, and a distinguished national/international record of research in systems pharmacology and translational therapeutics. Candidates should possess dynamic leadership skills, administrative expertise, and a clear commitment to – and excellence in – the education and mentorship of students, fellows, and faculty. The applicant must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department, as well as with the larger research community on campus, and to promote outreach to the community of clinical investigators. The candidate should articulate a compelling vision for the future of Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics and the role of a basic science department within a highly regarded academic medical center. The candidate must be qualified for appointment as a Full Professor in the Tenure Track of the standing faculty in the Department of Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics in the Perelman School of Medicine.

All interested applicants are invited to submit their curriculum vitae and letter of interest to the attention of: Lewis A. Chodosh, MD, PhD, Chair of Search Committee, Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics Chair.
