JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for conducting research in collaboration with a sponsoring Staff or Senior
Scientist. Assumes responsibility for a specific topic within the research program and serves as a technical or intellectual resource for related research work.

Directly accountable to the Staff/Senior Scientist.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*1. Develops research projects within the defined scope of the sponsoring scientist's
research program.

*2. Responsible for gathering preliminary data for grant applications, completion of
objectives of funded external grants, and preparation of completed work for publication.
Contributes to writing grant applications or manuscripts.

*3. Performs literature searches to gather information pertaining to experimental projects
or procedures in order to develop new protocols for the laboratory or research center.

*4. Responsible for determining experimental design, collecting data, performing
calculations, and analyzing results.

*5. Responsible for reviewing experimental controls and determining that the
experimental results are valid.

*6. Maintains and completes records of the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions from each experiment.

7. May oversee and advise the work of technical personnel in the laboratory or research center at the discretion of the supervising scientist.

*8. Participates in research meetings and formal seminars to present, explain, and discuss research conducted by the laboratory group. May deliver presentations to extramural audiences at national meetings and academic institutions.

9. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Ph.D. in biological or life sciences (or related discipline) or M.D required.

Minimum of 5 years relevant experience required.

Minimum of 10 peer-reviewed publications and demonstrated independent contribution required.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is typically performed in a laboratory or research environment.
