JOB SUMMARY:

Conducts and supervises original research in accordance with nationally accepted ethical
and regulatory guidelines. Provides research training for students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, and physicians. Maintains a productive, nationally recognized research program. Responsible for the scientific nature and direction of the work completed in the
laboratory. Responsible for the scientific content of grant applications and manuscripts. Formulates and contributes to specific programmatic objectives of the research enterprise.

Directly accountable to the Director, Weis Center for Research.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*1. Develops, maintains, and supervises a productive and nationally competitive research
program.

*2. Directs and supervises members of the laboratory group in the conduct of research.
Reviews and evaluates their work.

*3. Provides technical and intellectual leadership for the lab group. Identifies the
research question, formulates the hypothesis, plans the experiments, records the
observations and data, analyzes the data, and draws conclusions.

*4. Obtains and completes the goals of externally funded work.

*5. Prepares competed work for publication. Publishes research results and presents
research results in both informal and formal seminars within the Weis Center for Research
and to extramural audiences at national/international meetings and academic institutions.

*6. Plays a leading role in initiating collaborations with Weis Center scientists, Geisinger Clinic physicians and outside institutional lab groups.

7. Continuously demonstrates a commitment to Geisinger as an intellectual community and
supports Geisinger's goals as they relate to public service.

8. Demonstrates institutional service by participation on Weis Center and/or Geisinger committees.

9. Demonstrates an extensive record of national and international service through selection to journal editorial boards, scientific society committees and NIH peer review groups.

*10. Participates in the basic science training of clinical associates, residents,
fellows and students with the goal of developing collaborative projects with the clinical staff.

11. Shows good citizenship within the institution.

12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a research program.

Demonstrated organizational, planning, and analytical skills.

Demonstrated competence in written, oral, and electronic communication skills
(interpersonal/communication and technological effectiveness competencies).

Demonstrated success at the level of a Staff Scientist.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Ph.D. in biological or life sciences (or related discipline) or M.D required.

Minimum of ten years professional experience preferred.

Established record of productivity as demonstrated by substantial number of peer-reviewed scientific publications, record of sustained external funding of a research program, and extensive national service are essential.
