JOB SUMMARY:                                 

The Research Data Manager (RDM) is responsible for leading research data analysts and programmers within the Biostatistics Core (BC) and for contributing to technical and operational decisions advancing the Core’s data and analytics capacity. The RDM conducts and provides supervision of data extraction and data management for investigators within Geisinger Health System. In addition, the RDM establishes best practices on the creation, cleaning, organizing, and maintenance of complex data sets for research projects. The RDM will also be responsible for leading efforts in Natural Language Processing and clinical note conversions for research use,

 

The Research Data Manager works under the direct supervision of the Associate Director, BC to assist clinical departments in expanding their research capabilities and extracting departmental data using best practices to create and maintain complex data sets. The RDM will be responsible for aligning the efforts related to the Phenomics Initiative and incorporating them into the operations of the BC Data Analysts/Programmers.

 

The RDM performs duties to support the goals and objectives of Geisinger Health System and the Biostatistics Core in its efforts to provide quality patient care and quality research

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

*1. Data extraction:

a. Provides standards on data extraction from the electronic health record and other data sources within Geisinger.

b. Oversees the development of queries for extraction and creation of complex analytic data sets from developed data warehouses (i.e., Clinical Decision Intelligence Systems (CDIS), Marcellus Shale shared data warehouse, Phenomics Initiative database (PI-db), and additional internal structured databases)

c. Direct the documentation of data extractions and maintenance of programs.

d. Creates SQL and SAS programs (e.g., macros, views) to ease burden of manipulating large data sets (such as large extracts from CDIS), cleaning, and error checking.

e. Designs, develops, and maintains the programs required to extract, transform, and clean data.

f. Performs quality assurance on both programs and research data repositories.

*2. Supervising

a. Provide supervision and delegation of tasks to support the creation and maintenance of data sets for research.

b. Provides supervision and mentorship to the biostatisticians of the BC on use of large data sources.

c. Supervise Research Data Support Analysts and Research Data Analyst/Programmers.

d. Work with the Biostatistics Core Associate Director and Project Managers on implementing tracking of new requests and on educational opportunities to Geisinger.

e. Performs supervisory functions of departmental recruiting, hiring, training, discipline and counseling. Develops and maintains job descriptions for existing and additional staffing needs.

*3. Data Coordinating

a. Serves as Site Data Manager for the Health Maintenance Organization Research Network (HMORN) Virtual Data Warehouse (VDW)

b. Provides leadership on the use of large research data sources to investigators in Geisinger.

c. Provides management of large research data repositories used in Geisinger.

d. Works in conjunction with other IT groups to understand functionality, workflow and, performance of data systems.

e. Works in conjunction with IT groups to recommend software and hardware solutions in use of large data systems.

*4. Data Standards

a. Understands key terminology, classification and coding standards, and associated resources to promote creation of more effective and interoperable biomedical information systems and services, including electronic health records.

b. Develops practical applications and/or incorporates data standards into data models where appropriate (or on top of) based on use cases.

c. Educates users and researchers on use of data standards to facilitate a highly collaborative and extensible research data model.

*5. Natural Language Processing

a. Develops methods and/or applications to transform text data into HL7 Clinical Data Architecture (CDA) to enable phenotype algorithm development and use.

b. Uses Object Oriented Programming (OOP) languages to transform data.

c. Uses text manipulation languages and software such as PERL, Python, etc. to apply concepts (SNOMED, RadLex, etc.) to CDA.

 

*6. Compliance

a. Understands HIPAA and Privacy rules to facilitate the use of clinical data in research studies.

b. Develops standards for BC and P-ACDC to document regulatory approvals for research studies using HIPAA and Privacy rules.

c. Works with clinical and research staff to provide education on use of data for research studies.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.

 

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

 

Demonstrates excellent written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate quantitative information to investigators and other researchers.

Demonstrates sound judgment and resourcefulness.

Demonstrates advanced programming skills (SQL, SAS) and database development skills (Microsoft SQL Server, Teradata SQL Server) and the ability to instruct users on programming of large data repositories.

Demonstrates knowledge of research methodology and research data collection.

Demonstrates knowledge of HIPPA and Privacy rules related to use of PHI in research

Demonstrates ability to work independently on multiple projects simultaneously.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

 

Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, statistics or closely related field and minimum six (6) years of experience required with at least four (4) years of experience using clinical data.

 

Experience using object oriented programming (OOP) languages such as C++, C#, Java, etc. preferred

 

Experience using text manipulation languages and software such as PERL, Python, etc. preferred

 

Experience in medical setting preferred.
