Seeking Associate Chair of Department of Medicine

Associate Chair, Department of Medicine - The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria seeks an exceptional physician leader (MD/DO) in internal medicine (includes sub-specialty) to function as Associate Chair, Department of Medicine, to lead quality improvement. Other duties include teaching, research, and patient care. Candidates must be eligible for medical staff appointment and clinical privileges at university-affiliated hospitals.

The Department of Medicine exists within the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM), the nation’s largest medical school that is distributed among four locations across the state of Illinois. The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria was named among the top 15 producers of primary care graduates across the U.S., according to a new study in the medical journal, Academic Medicine.

The Department of Medicine at UICOM-Peoria provides patient care and clinical training at OSF-Saint Francis Medical Center, a 600+ bed tertiary care academic medical center which is the 4th largest hospital in the state, providing almost every service for patients in need of internal medicine expertise. The Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center (a joint collaboration of UICOMP and OSFHC) is a state-of-the-art medical training center, research hub, and among few world-wide of its caliber.

The Department is staffed with clinical faculty members in general internal medicine, infectious diseases, and rheumatology, whose primary focus is patient care and clinical education of residents and medical students. Over one hundred volunteer clinical faculty members supplement the core faculty by sharing their collective expertise in patient care and teaching in each of the medical subspecialties. In addition to established residency training programs in Internal Medicine and Medicine-Pediatrics, the Department has clinical fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease, Gastroenterology, and a Pulmonary/critical care fellowship is under development. UICOMP research (acclaimed world-wide) comprises a full spectrum of integrated basic science, translation science, and clinical research, including multidisciplinary research in health outcomes and economic evaluation. Cancer research is a primary focus with additional active research in channel biology, and neurosciences, including Alzheimer’s dementia, multiple sclerosis, as well as the neurotoxicology of environmental agents, stroke, and spinal cord injury.

The Associate Chair of Medicine will be an integral part of promoting innovative educational programs, research, and scholarly activities that produce high quality physicians and patient care.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates for this position must possess and MD or DO degree or its foreign equivalent, three years of an accredited internal medicine residency, and board certification in internal medicine
  • Candidates must be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Candidates at the rank of Assistant Professor will be considered for Associate Professor with a minimum of five years’ experience as a faculty member in a training program approved by the (ACGME) or AOA
  • Candidates must have a substantial record of leadership and achievement in academic medicine, as well as significant experience with educational and training programs in internal medicine
