The NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR) is seeking an outstanding and accomplished, tenure-eligible physician scientist to serve as Chief of the Laboratory of Pathology. The Center for Cancer Research is the largest intramural effort at NIH and a major user of the NIH Clinical Research Center, a state-of-the-art hospital dedicated to clinical research. The CCR encourages and supports interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary translational research. Strengths of the CCR clinical research portfolio include genitourinary malignancies, immunotherapy, immunotoxins, and transplantation, lymphoma, pediatric and women’s malignancies, thoracic and gastrointestinal cancers and imaging. There is also a major emphasis on precision medicine and integration of genomics into diagnostic pathology. These program areas enhance and enable collaborations, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research, and a dynamic translational research process in which discovery, development, and delivery are facilitated.

The Chief of the Laboratory of Pathology will be an active investigator who will direct a focused research program, identify areas of future research that should be carried out by the Laboratory of Pathology and provide global oversight for the entire Laboratory of Pathology research portfolio.

The Chief of the Laboratory of Pathology will also oversee anatomic pathology services for all NIH Institutes. This includes services for all patients enrolled in clinical trials in the NIH Clinical Research Center, for all patients being considered for entry into clinical trials, and for epidemiologic and case studies of disease. Clinical diagnostic services include surgical pathology, cytogenetics, cytopathology, dermatopathology, postmortem pathology, hematopathology, pediatric pathology, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics, and genomics. In addition, the Laboratory provides expert consultation in response to extramural requests related to challenging diagnostic problems.

The Chief of the Laboratory of Pathology also has oversight responsibility for an Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited residency in Anatomic Pathology, an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Cytopathology and an ACGME-accredited Hematopathology fellowship. The Chief will also assume a leadership role in the establishment of productive relationships between the CCR Laboratory of Pathology and the recently created Murtha Cancer Center at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as well as the Department of Pathology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (both located adjacent to the NIH Bethesda campus).

Position Requirements:

Candidates must be physicians who have completed training in Anatomic Pathology and are eligible for credentialing at the NIH Clinical Research Center. Citizenship in the United States of America is not required. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Interested applicants should submit:

  • A letter of interest in the position including a career synopsis (1-3 pages)
  • A statement of research interests (1-2 pages)
  • A current curriculum vitae and complete bibliography
  • Names and contact information of five references

Applications must be submitted electronically between April 12, 2016 and April 21, 2016 to Patrick Miller: millerp@mail.nih.gov. For questions regarding the application process, please contact Jennifer R. Smith: Jennifer.smith5@nih.gov
