  Postdoctoral Fellow Cluster Hire

We are seeking a cohort of highly motivated individuals with a background in Human Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, Statistical Genetics, Population Genetics, and/or Bioinformatics for postdoctoral positions at Geisinger Health System in the Institute for Biomedical and Translational Informatics.  We are currently integrating phenotype data from electronic health records with genomic data from whole exome sequencing and genome-wide genotyping assays on over 25,000 individuals with plans to scale up to 250,000 individuals.  Research in our group is highly collaborative, with a broad focus on exploring the genetic architecture of complex traits to improve our understanding of common diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disease, and pharmacogenomic traits among others. The approaches we explore will involve the development and application of new statistical and computational methods with a focus on the detection of gene-gene interactions, gene-environment interactions, and network and/or pathway effects associated with human disease.  Systems Genomics approaches, which involve the integration of multiple types of ‘omics data, is also a driving focus of the group.  These meta-dimensional approaches hold the promise of providing a more comprehensive view of genetic and genomic information.  Phenome-wide association studies, which allow for the exploration of the broader phenome rather than one trait at a time, complete the comprehensive analysis strategy for genome-phenome exploration.  All of these tools and methodologies that we use and develop focus on Big Data applications and emphasize improvements in visual analytics as we embrace the new horizons of genomic information.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Potential to work independently and complete complex assignments.

Demonstrated teamwork skills.

Development of skills in scientific written, oral, and electronic communications related to requirements of the position such as manuscript writing and scientific presentations in meetings.

Experience in manipulating large-scale genomic data and efficient utilization of computer clusters.

Statistical analysis experience using R, SAS, or STATA required and programming in python or perl is desired.

Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and databases for the analysis of genetics data.

Record of peer-reviewed publications.

Highly motivated and committed to biomedical research.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Ph.D. degree in the area of Genetic Epidemiology, Human Genetics, Statistical Genetics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Population Genetics, and/or Bioinformatics or M.D with appropriate research experience required.
