JOB SUMMARY:

The Speech-Language Pathologist in Clinical Research provides speech-language assessment, treatments and therapy required by research projects undertaken in the Autism and Developmental Medicine Institute according to hospital, state, professional and federal regulations and guidelines. The Speech-Language Pathologist in Clinical Research meets the standards set system-wide for Speech-Language Pathologists, and creates an environment and culture that enables the hospital to fulfill its mission by providing patient safety and patient-centered treatment. In addition, the position:
• Requires effective communication skills for working with patients, families, and caregivers.
• Requires effective communication skills for departmental and interdepartmental relationships.
• Requires competency in speech-language pathology evaluation, assessment, care planning and treatment.
• Requires task delegation and supervision of fellows, technicians and assistants (when applicable).
• Maintains open and on-going communication with hospital departments to ensure patients, staff, and hospital needs are met.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Essential Job Functions
Leads or participates in clinical research programs in autism and developmental disabilities that include a speech pathology component.
1. *Within the context of the research project and as required by the individual research protocols, evaluates patients’ speech abilities and therapy needs, in accordance with regulating bodies, and professional standards: utilizes specialized testing procedures & skills, incorporates data from patient/family/caregiver interview, medical records & assesses the patient's speech, language, swallow, coordination, perception, sensation, cognition, communication skills and rehabilitation potential.
2. *Within the context of the research program, administers or refers to colleagues for skilled speech therapy treatment and monitors patient response.
3. *Records data from the research evaluation into subject/research database.
4. *When appropriate, correlates data from evaluation to develop an individualized speech therapy plan of care including short and long term goals in collaboration with patient/family/caregiver.
5. *Modifies speech therapy treatment and plan of care according to research protocol
and/or patient ability and response in collaboration with principal investigator of the research project, physician and other providers and patient/family/caregiver.
6. *Plans for research protocol-required home assessment, patient & family instruction, equipment recommendation, home program recommendations & recommendations for community support. Plans for or collaborates with colleague for same outside context of a research protocol.

7. *Documents protocol-required and other speech therapy treatment, patient performance, progress and response to care, and tests and measurements in compliance with regulating and licensing bodies and professional standards.
8. *Delegates appropriate aspects of research-required speech therapy and care to research assistants with training as speech therapist assistants, fellows and support personnel according to their expertise/experience, maintains the responsibility for the research subject and patient treatment and plan at all times.
9. *Works with project principal investigator and research team to schedules research subjects for speech therapy assessments and treatments according to availability of equipment and space including coordinating patient's schedule with other services.
10. *Successfully completes all assigned training and annual skills competency as determined by Geisinger and by its contractor, Health South, based on new responsibilities, specialized equipment, high risk/problem prone/or low volume procedures including but not limited to waived testing as applicable, application of restraints, and emergency response techniques.
11. *Reviews and analyzes research and subject reports, feedback, and any new developments to target processes for improvement.
12. *Develops education for other clinical members of the research team to increase their understanding of speech and language therapy options and the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
13. *Reviews data on research subject/patient outcomes, satisfaction and safety.
14. *Maintains current licensure and certifications.
15. *Bills for assessments, speech therapy and other activities in compliance with corporate policy and regulation bodies, ensuring that activities that are required only by the research protocols and which would not be standard of care outside of the research are billed to the research project.
16. *Documents subject/patient assessment, planning and care on appropriate forms following corporate and hospital policy and procedures.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

• Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
• Ability to coordinate, analyze, observe, make decisions, and meet deadlines in a detail-oriented manner.
• Ability to work independently without supervision.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Research Experience
• Two or more years of research experience related to speech and language therapy, literacy curriculum development or the effectiveness of augmentative and alternative communication devices for children with developmental delay and/or autism.
• Knowledge of the regulations governing research with human subjects (45 CR 47) and with the research provisions of HIPAA and HITECH.
• Knowledge of standards for record keeping, consent, etc for research.
Experience with Children with Autism and Development Disabilities
• Proficiency in Augmentative and Alternative Communication
License or Certification:
• Must be in possession of current state license or certification on or before the first day of employment.
• CPR certification preferred unless otherwise required by hospital policy.
Education, Training and Experience:
• Successful completion of an accredited Master’s Degree program or accredited Bachelor’s Degree program plus sufficient experience in the field.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• General office equipment such as telephone, copy machine, fax machine, calculator, computer.

Physical Requirements:
• Good visual acuity and ability to communicate.
• Ability to lift a minimum of 30 pounds and ability push/pull a minimum of 30 pounds, which includes the lifting, pushing and/or pulling of medical supplies and equipment and the transferring and repositioning of patients. Reasonable assistance may be requested when lifting, pushing, and/or pulling are undertaken, which exceeds these minimum requirements.
