The Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Geisinger Health System is searching for a doctoral leader to play a critical role in developing expanded capabilities of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. The PhD or MD candidate should have experience in a CLIA-regulated molecular genetics/pathology laboratory. The applicant is expected to have knowledge of next generation and Sanger sequencing, developing genotyping and mutation detection assays, and have the adequate knowledge and experience to work with and/or supervise bioinformatics activities. He/she should have the ability to interact with clinicians in a tertiary/quaternary medical center environment. Duties include analysis and troubleshooting of daily clinical molecular tests, supervision and training of technologists, ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies, designing confirmatory tests for clinical and research results, and assisting in projects bridging clinicians with Weis Research Center researchers.

 

The Weis Center for Research is home to laboratory-based research and research training at Geisinger with programs investigating molecular and cellular mechanisms in cardiovascular biology, neuroscience, genetics, cancer and other areas. Geisinger has created one of the nation’s largest biobanks and its MyCode project is generating whole exon sequences of over 100,000 individuals to correlate with phenotypic data from Geisinger’s comprehensive electronic medical record. The Genomic Medicine Institute conducts innovative research in genetics, genomics and family history to enhance the quality of life, improve healthcare value for patients, and integrate genomics into clinical care. The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves an integrated health care delivery system, consisting of laboratories located in 8 hospitals and more than 70 primary and multispecialty care sites, serving 3 million patients in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. The practice group includes 31 pathologists and doctoral scientists. The lab performs approximately 7.8 million billable clinical tests, 70,000 surgical pathology cases, and 68,000 cytology cases annually.


Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), located Danville, Pa., the largest tertiary/quaternary care teaching hospital in the region, is licensed for 475 beds, including 89 pediatric beds in the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.  GMC, a MagnetHospital, maintains the region’s only Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center with additional qualifications in pediatrics. GMC offers an array of highly specialized medical and surgical services, including neurosciences, cardiovascular services, transplantation, women’s health (in the Women’s Pavilion), oncology and orthopaedics.  The Hospital for Advanced Medicine serves as an integrated center for the most critical patients.
