The Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center and School of Medicine of Emory University, one of the country’s premier health sciences centers, has opened an outstanding opportunity for a senior tenured or tenure-track basic science and translational scientist and academic leader with research interests in diabetes, obesity, and metabolism to be the founding director of a new Center for Diabetes and Metabolism Research.

As a scientific researcher in Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine, this visionary leader will strengthen Emory’s expertise in the areas of basic and translational research in diabetes, obesity, and metabolism and collaborate with faculty and researchers with established strengths in research, education, and clinical care. Under his/her leadership, the Center for Diabetes and Metabolism Research will build a team of research faculty to support strong clinical and health services research, as well as the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center at the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH).

The Woodruff Health Sciences Center and School of Medicine maintain a dynamic and supportive research environment in diabetes and metabolism discovery that provides excellent opportunities for a large number of researchers and clinicians from basic science and clinical departments. Working closely with the Vice President for Research in collaboration with the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Director for the Center for Diabetes and Metabolism Research is responsible for assuring the growth and quality of research programs for the Center. Offices and laboratories with state-of-the-art facilities are located in Atlanta on Emory’s main campus. There are tremendous opportunities for growth and development of a vibrant Research Center as the Director builds upon existing and envisioned research programs coupled with strong resources and renowned scientists.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have a MD and/or PhD and possess a strong record of academic research scholarship with strong leadership and communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to publish and secure external funding. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to build and lead teams in scientific collaborations across the Woodruff Health Science Center and Emory Medicine with other academic schools, departments, divisions, and centers, as well as with Atlanta area universities and organizations (e.g., Georgia Tech, Yerkes Primate Center, VAMC, Grady Health System, Centers for Disease Control).
