TRAVEL REQUIRED TO THE FORTY FORT RESEARCH OFFICE

 

 

JOB SUMMARY:The Economics Research Analyst will work closely with a health economist in conducting research and evaluation of various healthcare research and quality improvement topics, interventions and projects focused on estimating value using cost and utilization outcomes. Work will include data analysis and related tasks including extracting, manipulating, and analyzing secondary data (e.g. electronic health records, claims data, patient/provider survey data, etc.) obtained from various data sources within Geisinger Health System and various external data sources for research purposes. This position requires sound knowledge of statistics and quantitative analytic methods, as well as experience in working with large datasets, especially those related to healthcare. Other tasks will include searching, reviewing, synthesizing and summarizing published literature and unpublished information to support research initiatives and evaluation efforts, and collaborating with internal and external teams to support research and evaluation work. This position reports to the Director of Health Economics Research and Evaluation or designee.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*1. Working with research and evaluation project PIs and their teams, including Biostatistics Core, and external collaborators, responsible for defining project data sources and needs. Identifies issues and contributes to formulating hypotheses.

*2. Searches, reviews, synthesizes and summarizes published and unpublished literature, evidence, guidelines and best practices for use in writing proposals, interim research products, presentations, and manuscripts for publication.

*3. Manipulate raw data files and convert them into usable formats (e.g. Excel, Access, STATA, SAS) by accessing a wide range of quantitative and qualitative information.

*4. Communicate with data shops within GHS (e.g. Biostatistics Core, Geisinger Health Plan) or externally to discuss necessary data elements, and identify most appropriate source. Understand the limitations and idiosyncrasies of each data source.

*5. Perform data analyses using appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods consistent with current guidance for research standards using a statistical software package such as SAS or STATA

*6. Apply methods and software for economic evaluation (e.g., TreeAge for cost-effectiveness modeling and simulation).

*7. Assist lead investigators in preparing data and information summaries, reports, tables, graphs, presentations for internal and external use including contributing to presentations at scientific meetings and publishable manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

*8. Possesses ability to work on multiple and unrelated projects concurrently and meet required deadlines.

9. Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIFIC POSITION DUTIES:
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:Skilled user of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint)

Demonstrates proficiency and technical knowledge of statistical software (SAS and/or STATA)

Ability to prepare and present high-level and technical information.

Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.

Demonstrated competency in written, oral and electronic communication skills (interpersonal/communication and technological effectiveness competencies).



EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s degree in quantitative fields (e.g. economics, business, sciences, engineering) with knowledge of statistics and mathematics

Masters Degree in a field related to health services research including quantitative analysis and health economics is preferred.

Experience in working with large data sets and a statistical software package (SAS and STATA) is required; additional training will be provided.

Experience in healthcare and/or public health is preferred but not required.
