The ACOS of Extended Care & Rehabilitation Service oversees management of all of the Extended Care & Rehabilitation Service programs. The Extended Care and Rehabilitation Service consists of several large and complex Sections under ECRS, each with university affiliated teaching programs that are provided clinical and administrative oversight. These programs include a Community Living Center with a 71-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation unit that includes treating specialties of Geriatric Evaluation and Management -GEM Unit (with a St. Louis University Geriatric residency teaching program) and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredited 12-bed Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation Medicine (with a Washington University affiliated Physiatry residency teaching program), 15 Hospice and Palliative Care beds as well as an active Palliative Care Consultation Team  (with a St. Louis University affiliated residency teaching program in Palliative Medicine), Respite, and Skilled Nursing Care. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation section includes a Polytrauma Network Site (VISN 15’s site for Polytrauma/Traumatic Brain Injury referrals, with comprehensive evaluation and management), that Extended Care & Rehabilitation Service manages the only VISN 15 Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredited programs including Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation, Amputee and the Low Vision Intermediate Clinic under Blind Rehabilitation.

Other Programs under ECRS are  the  division of Geri-PACT and the division of Home and Community Based Services with Home Based Primary Care services, Medical Foster Home Program, Community ADHC, Community Nursing Home Program, Homemaker/Home health aide program, Home Respite and VDHCBS.

The ACOS is responsible for clinical care and administrative oversight of all aspects of ECRS which includes leadership of ECRS functions such as continuous improvements activities, CARF, and Joint Commission and Long Term Care Institutue and direct supervision of medical staff and other various clinical and administrative staff. The ACOS reports to the Chief of Staff of the VASTLHCS and participates in medical center and medical staff leadership activities. The ACOS will positively support the goals of ECRS, the VA medical center, VISN, and VHA. The ACOS of ECRS will maintain and promote high ethical, clinical, and administrative standards that are carried into the decision making process. The ACOS is responsible for developing both long and short term policies and plans for the ECRS service line giving special consideration to the integration of ECRS within other service lines to ensure an interdisciplinary approach and a seamless health care system. The ACOS makes recommendations to the Chief of Staff, regarding all resource management issues, including personnel actions, budget, major and minor equipment, space, benchmarking issues, outreach and networking initiatives, and best practices. In addition, promotes quality patient-centered health services to ensure high quality of care to veterans.
