DUTIES:

PRIMARY FUNCTION : The function of the St. Louis VAMC Chief of Staff is multifaceted. Tour of Duty is Monday-Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. However, physicians are on call 24/7.

  • The Chief of Staff provides Leadership and Organizational Representation by promoting the development of healthcare professionals through counseling, mentoring, and teaching; provides an environment that provides patient care, education activity, and administrative planning and evaluation based on integration and application of current knowledge.
  • Incumbent takes an active role as a management team member, providing advice and counsel in defining and accomplishing the facility's and VA's mission and goals. Incumbent promotes an effective mix, coordination, and support of clinical programs by evaluating current and potential patient population needs, clinical workload and resources, special program mandates and cost/benefit analyses, making recommendations to the facility director and ensuring implementation of approved clinical proposals.
  • Promotes standards of clinical competence and conduct for staff which are maintained through: compliance with credentialing and privileging processes, monitoring and evaluation of clinical practice, peer review, consideration of clinical performance patterns in clinical privileging, and other appropriate quality improvement activities.
  • Creates an environment of system oriented continuous quality improvement, within which programs and quality of care effectiveness are evaluated.
  • Effectively integrates the needs of the affiliation relationship with Saint Louis University and Washington University with patient care needs at the facility; ensures effective supervision of non-resident trainees, and of residents.
  • Evaluates all teaching programs to determine effectiveness in meeting program goals, facility and patient needs, and appropriateness of the organization and administration of the programs.

Facility/Area InformationThe VA St. Louis Health Care System is a two-division tertiary care facility providing inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, Spinal Cord Injury, and rehabilitation, as well as 65 subspecialty areas. There are 218 hospital operating beds, a 71-bed Community Living Center, a 50-bed Rehabilitation Domiciliary for Homeless Veterans, and a 25-bed Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program. This medical center services veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois. The John Cochran Division is located in midtown St. Louis and is in close proximity to its affiliated medical schools, Saint Louis University, and Washington University. It houses the medical center's operative surgical capabilities, the ambulatory care unit, and a six-story Clinical Addition that includes the surgical facilities, intensive care units, and the clinical laboratory. The Jefferson Barracks Division is a multi-building complex situated in south St. Louis County. It provides psychiatric treatment, regional spinal cord injury treatment, a nursing home care unit, geriatric health care, outpatient clinic, rehabilitation services, a domiciliary for homeless veterans and a newly opened Fisher House. VA St. Louis utilizes an electronic medical record. This medical center also maintains Community Based Outpatient Clinics in St. Charles, Missouri; Belleville, Illinois; Washington, Missouri; north St. Louis County, and at the Missouri Vet Home in St. Louis, Missouri.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Citizen of the United States.
  • Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • First-Year Residency (Internship). Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Licensure: Must have a current, full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (e.g. Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Must pass a pre-employment medical examination, which may include drug testing.
  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d)
  • Board certification or its equivalent, unless waived by the Chief Medical Director.
  • Extensive clinical experience and an understanding of the relationship between various patient care providers
  • History of successful administrative accomplishments
  • Leadership traits that demonstrate the courage of convictions, patience, and an ability to work with others
  • Emotional and physical stamina appropriate to the position
  • Competence in basic management skills

Preferred Experience: Previous VA Chief of Staff experience preferred.
